Imaginary chess: if you could invent a totally new piece to chess, what it could it be?

I would probably give the berserker a point value of 6 points.

with a 9x9 board and the two extra pawns it would change opening theory. imagine having an extra center pawn per side and an extra rank at mid board.

the extra file will add another complexity to rook play and the diagonals will be increased for the bishops.

it would change the game in multiple ways.

It would be an elephant

The Bomb.

The piece only exists as an alternative to "stalling out" of a lost game.

On his own turn, a player may choose instead of making a move to detonate his bomb, destroying the chess-board and all Pawns and pieces of both players. The move counts the same as resigning... the player who detonates his Bomb automatically loses the game.

Why would anyone do it?

Right now, a player who is losing badly has three options:

  1. Man up and resign.
  2. Play on until mate, wasting everyone's time.
  3. Stall out, wasting the opponent's time and possibly getting banned on a FPV.

Adding a Bomb piece gives the player a fourth option.

 4. Boom. Take that. New game?

Couldn’t have said it better myself. I was going to suggest The Hammer, but I like this better.

5. As many people have said, " The SPORT of chess probably had its point of origin in India.'' Seeing's how English merchant ships came from their tedious journey's accompanied by a strange board game whose pieces closely resembled a game of war between two armies of Indian descent. Of course, anyone being of a sound mind must have meant the corresponding war to betwixt two middle European nations. (Kings and Queens and Glutens)

Accordingly, and more naturally, the game should include either Wizards Fire=breathing Dragons or both.

Imposter: it would be worth 10 points

Exclusive to Setup Chess gamemode.

It moves like a queen, and can be selected to be disguised as any piece. And it moves like a queen no matter what you make it look like.

you are meant to pretend that its a certain piece for a while then strike with it when your opponent least expects it. If it ever moves in a way that contradicts what piece it's disguised as, it will reveal itself to be the Imposter and move like a king for the rest of the game.

It’s just that the Queen has the option to move like a knight, which would then be added to the end of any move that is not a capture.

No, it just moves like a queen.

The point of it is that you have to be slick.

What if you disguise it as a knight

185 - Yes, much easier that way, thanks!

me:: "What's that behind you?"

opponent: (turns around.) "Where?"

me: (moves Qa1-c6.) "Nevermind. Your turn."

opponent: (turns back around.)

Chess clearly needs a princess. Spoiled, gets upset when shes not given her own way, hates to lose.

Sort of like some players, just now they have a piece that they can relate to!

None, I like how chess it is. Please don't ruin it. Engines did that already.

Clearly I am the opposite

I have a new variant: Anarchy Chess

Pawns move diagonally and cannot capture anything except other pawns. They can jump 2 tiles over other pieces.

Knights move 4 by 1 tiles instead of 2 by 1 tiles. And they can move on and off the board, the only limit to their movement is how big wherever you play chess is.

Bishops can also move like knights alongside being normal bishops. And they can go through any number of pieces, but they can only capture pawns and it is forbidden for a bishop to deliver check.

Rooks can jump over up to 3 other pieces as they move, destroying every piece they jump over. And they cannot stop moving until they either reach a 4th piece or the edge of the board.

Queens only move up to 3 tiles in any direction, and you can replace one of your lost pawns whenever you move the queen in the spot she used to occupy.

Kings can also move off of the board like knights can, and they can capture friendly pawns. Which causes the pawn to move forward until it hits something and captures whatever it hits. When your king is checkmated you can sacrifice your queen (if you have one) to destroy the piece that put you in check.

Captured pieces can move and interact with kings or knights outside the board.

When you capture via En passant, the enemy king will be moved to where the enemy pawn was captured.

When you castle, anything that was around your king before it moved will be captured, friendly or enemy. And you can castle endlessly until your king is placed into check for the first time.

When you promote a pawn, you have to keep moving the pawn past the back row, and if it touches a piece your enemy captured then you get that piece back and can promote the pawn back.

And the final rule; in the beginning, both players move at the same time, deciding when to move. When the first piece is captured, the player who captured it moves first for the rest of the game.

181 - excuse the confusion. I was writing about my own invention to chess, not commenting on your post.

how about the arch bishop

Da_Monkay

cancer cell, moves like a pawn but when it takes it converts those pawns into cancer cells, if it reaches the end it can now move like a king, if it takes a piece it converts however much that piece is worth into converted pawns, converted pawns cannot take, can only be moved once to anywhere in the board and exist only to block

T-jankins9522
Bouncer , when a pawn is on the same row file or diagonal, moves like queen toward that pawn . Cannot go past that pawn.
Yui-Metal

I would add a piece that had a queen move if you sacrifice a pawn

I been think of the 17th chess piece. This piece will be at the outside of the board at the start of the game you can move this piece wherever you want and this piece can take out any piece and any piece can take this piece out.You can move this piece like a pawn if you want to take other piece out. This piece can move to any box you want but it has a cooldown of one round you need to move other piece before you can move it back.

So what do you think of this new piece and what should I name it.
