impression of -400 points chess players

If I play someone 400 points lower than me, I feel like they just dont get it.

oups, posted my accident: If I play some one -400 points than (so around 850) I feel like they just dont get it. I have been there so I don't judge a lower player. but I wonder, when someone 1500 xp say plays agaisn't me, does he feel that I am just plain dumb or is it sharper tactical errors that they detect and they still feel like 1300 xp chess (blitz) is respectable? sorry if question is a little unclear, basically: a 1300 player is monstrously better than a 900 player. is this difference as sharp if you compare a 1300 with a 1700? or is it more always "noticing the details" that differenciate a 1300 with a 1700 ?

MrNossovitch

because at some point; i doubt 2400 level players think 2000 level players are playing like dumbasses and just dont get it right?

Definitely not "I'm playing a dumbass" but yes, I assume the feeling of "they just don't get it" never goes away.

It might be useful to point out that you never completely understand chess. So it might seem like 2400 (or 2600, or world champion) must understand basically everything, but this isn't true (just listen to their press conferences).

Basically in chess, what we all do is make our best guess. At a high level, it's a very educated guess... but there comes a point in (almost) all games where the players don't know for sure.

So when you're much better, you can tell when the lower rated player is guessing, and you can tell when they guess incorrectly. So yes, in those moments it seems they don't know what they're doing even if it's 2500 vs Carlsen.

thank you, very informative. the higher i go the more players are condesendant and rude too. but thats another phenomenon

The rudeness stops at about 1800 (in chess.com), at that level almost no one is rude

I have some friends who are 1300, and trust me i dont see how i can lose vs them. I win 50games in a row vs them in OTB. In one game I blunder rook in one move but still win in knight vs rook endings. The same when I play vs 2000, in 10 moves i see that i cant win, in 15 I fight for a draw, in 20 my position is faling apart.

Really?  I know one NM who is so rude I had to block him from commenting in my threads.  Probably some kid, so age probably needs to be taken into account as well.

Setting aside the rudeness issue since that's more internet based than anything, I think that yes, much stronger players tend to think that weaker players "don't get it."

Not too long ago I was watching a game online played between two players rated around 2450 each.

I was also texting with a player rated in the high 2700's at the same time and they were making a lot of remarks about "What a terrible idea" or "How can they possibly not do ____" etc.

So I think that the reality of one player outrating another by several hundred points naturally means that the higher rated player will have some level of disdain about the lower rated player's ability.

it is just funny to me that someone 1500 -1600 looks at my 1250-1300 blitz moves as highly inaccurate. since when you are playing your own level you think you are doing things right lol. and well the rudeness, I just dont get people who will say stuff like: "lucky" if they lose, or "gg too easy" when they win. im glad it gets better at 1800 ish, although i doubt ill ever get there haha

On youtube there are videos called "banter blitz" with Jan Gustafsson (2600 FIDE) and Peter Svidler (2700 FIDE).

Sometimes they play IMs and GMs, and will remark how bad their opponent's moves or ideas are haha.

(They will also criticize their own moves, when they're bad.)

Well yes, it is probably about the difference rather than absolute skill. Everything is relative. If computers were sentient they would have much disdain for the Super GMs' play..
