What are some of the must do to improve your game

Play...Play...Play and then Play again

Self-criticism. At this moment my monthly Performance Rating is 1814 (rated games against engines on LucasChess). Considering that on last month it was 1396 and I'm a 1500 I'm surely improving.

I agree, just continue to play. My rating's nothing impressive, but when I compare myself to how I was playing the year before there's always a significant change and it will only persist if you continue to keep playing.

Some players I know break their highest rating then all of a sudden they become "play-shy" because they don't want to be kicked back where they came from again.

I've recently bought this book on chess tactics, and from experience alone through just playing continously there's not really a lot I don't already know in this book. I've just been able to give what I've been doing all this time a formal name.

If you're serious about getting up there with the big guys, I'd focus more on strategy instead of dirty chess tactics.
