Tactics and mating patterns are a great place to start. Solving tactics slowly, i.e. no time restraint, and playing slower games will also help you improve. -- Also, a deeper positional understanding will help in making a strategical plan. There are a lot of books that cover positional imbalances, etc. Good luck!
