We had a similar incident at the tournament I played last weekend where I scalped the master. A player went home to eat and relax and returned to the tournament early, but late for the round. His clock was never started, however, since the round started earlier than agreed to by the players. He just started his game later, no time forfieture. Myself, I think you had every right to complain and demand your time back. Rounds should start when posted or agreed upon--any change must involve the consent of ALL the players. If you weren't there, you couldn't consent to the change. You was robbed--I hope you won.
In a recent OTB rapid event...
Well Reb, I'm sorry to have to say that it's partly your own fault
You were fully aware that the 'scheduled' starting times could never be trusted fully (they started late, then caught up to the normal time, then started early from round 5 on) so wandering off for an ice cream wasn't a very clever idea.

Actually this is wrong on several counts : 1 ) I had not been paying strict attention to the earlier starting times since round 5 and wasnt aware that rounds were being started early until I was missing 3 minutes in round 8.
2 ) Organizers ARE bound by their posted/printed start times for rounds unless ALL players agree to some deviation. I am not aware that there was ever any announcement that rounds would be started early nor of the players agreement to allow this. I certainly didnt agree to a change in the posted schedule and nothing was posted that start times had indeed changed....
Me personally I would have had to say something because they cannot advertise one time and start at another!!
Undoubtedly you would be in the right to ask for your time back. It isn't fair if you were early for the round, and yet still lost 20% of your time! I'm surprised the organisers didn't just wait for the official time before starting each round.

I don't think so. They have printed official starting times and that's what all players have agreed upon. It's their responsibility to stick to that agreement, or make sure every single player knows about any changes in the format AND consents to that.
Yesterday my wife and I played a 9 round swiss G/15 tourney in Torres Novas , Portugal. As usual the first round didnt start on time... do they ever ?! This caused subsequent rounds to also be late and not start at the scheduled/published start times. The first 4 rounds were before lunch with 5 rounds after lunch. After the lunch break the tourney was back on schedule with round 5 starting at the scheduled time. After round 5 the rounds began to be started earlier than the scheduled start times, with no complaints from the players. After round 7 I took a toilet break and decided to get some ice cream from a parlor that was nearby in the Mall , in which we were playing this event. I checked the start time for round 8 and it was cheduled to start at 5:30 pm and since it wasnt even 5 pm yet I saw I had plenty of time. However, when I came back the round had already started and I was missing about 3 minutes from my clock and it still wasnt 5:30 pm ! I thought about complaining and insisting that I be given back my missing time but didnt and played anyway....... what would you have done ?! Another question..... do you think I had legitimate grounds for a complaint and insisting that I get my time back ?
Your wife also plays chess? How lucky you are! I'll set up this requirement for my next wife! Parabéns!
I had sort of the same thing at a tournament. Everyone was back from lunch early, so they decided to start the round. There was a little confusion and when I sat down at my board, my opponent wasn't there. So after some time, the TD said I would have a bye in the round, because the other guy must have dropped out. Hmmmm....then he invites me to play a game with a guy that is just hanging out there...in the middle of that game, in comes my original opponent, right on time for the round. He got really angry and just went home.
That was just all shades of wrong. I think that posted start times should be respected by everyone, including the TD.
