It is not true today.  Today's education is a joke where nobody really cares about educating, just keeping all kids in classrooms, which results in out of control students who just don't care.

see, you said it yourself

if they dont care about educating, why give them ur full attention when u can just give them a lil bit and give chess a little bit?

A lot of teachers do care about educating. And I think you should care a bit more too. Play chess in school when you finished your work and don't have anything else to do or when it's break time or something. I seriously don't think playing chess in class is good on most occasions.

If I were the teacher I would ban you for playing the Wayward Queen. But seriously, I may be old fashioned but if the teacher tells you something you should listen? It is basic respect, there is plenty of time for chess at home.

See, I'm not saying that we shouldn't respect teachers. They work really hard and deal with a lot of stuff in order to do their job well. But shouldn't respect go both ways? Just because I disagree with them doesn't mean that I don't respect them. Just do a simple grade check to see if the student is done with his/her work (if the teacher doesnt trust them) and then just let them play chess! Like, at least let us have some free time where we can play chess in peace and take a break from Shakespeare and congruent triangles and all that stuff

Teachers aren't some demonic beings sent to encapsulate us all into a compressed life. If you think all teachers don't show any amount of respect for you, I'm guessing it's because you play chess in class when you should be listening. Maybe I'm wrong about that but still

i do play chess in class, yes, but my grades are straight A+'s and I've had only like 2 zeroes (missing assignments) in my whole life (im in middle school). Yes, my teachers do show respect for me, but just me in particular because i always am done rly fast

I see. Well, if you already know all the material they are teaching, I guess it's justified in your case so it's fine.

But just know that playing in class is not particularly respectful.

Bro what is wrong with the schools that are banning chess.com?! Like, their argument doesn't even make sense.

teachers:

'A distraction during learning time''Close ur damned chromebooks children''Do not play games in school''Yes, chess is a game, just like coolmathgames.com and those damned emulators''Chess is pokemon with pawns'

the great chess debate:

'Teacher: Why are you playing chess? __ 'Student: Im done with notes' __ 'Teacher: I dont care, just do some work for other classes' __ 'Student: I finished it all bc I'm an Asian chess player tryhard' __ 'Teacher: Doodle some school slander idk' __ 'Student: Already done (Teacher v. Student: Chess Debate SLANDERRR)' __ 'Teacher: Why u want to play chess so much?? Its basically just coolmathgames; you move thingies here and there; then you eat the other players king/queen idk...' __ 'Student: Obvsly u dont know anything abt chess' __ 'Teacher: Shut up, im better than magnus calrsen.' __ 'Student: I challenge you to a game'

Game be like:

So, teacher, put away ur stupid arguments and just let students play ches!! Its not that hard, just let them do it, whut is ur problem?!

If it was just about chess.  And if the students has the self control to ONLY be on chess.com during non class time there would be no problem with it.  But school have had to ban the site, and stop chess because the kids cannot control themselves.  If it takes way from study time, class time, and learning?  Then its a distraction.

yea well why should the stuents with self control suffer because of the stupid ones without it? its not their fault

Absolutely agree with you.  But this is the world we live in.  We cater to the weak.  I have grand kids in elementary school.  And from the small bits i see?  I am so glad im out of school.  Things have changed and not for the better.

I remember in little league if you were not good enough you didn't make the team.  That simple.  Now we have t-ball where everyone is a "winner".  I help run scholastic chess tournaments and everyone gets at ;east a ribbon.  Even if they lose all their games.  Now do i believe in rewarding people for failure?  No, but they are not my tournaments.

The teacher may care, but nobody else does.  If the teacher does not care then phones would be totally ok.

Times have changed. When I was in school, we had some respect for some of the teachers. The games teacher hit us with a gym shoe. The woodwork teacher hit us with a long, thin piece of wood. Today they would be charged for this. We knew that there would be consequences for behaving like a$$holes. No phones or internet. A very different world.

Don't envy today's teachers (except every summer when they get 2 months off).

I was born just a little too late for the paddling era thankfully. I'm Generation X and although there was no corporal punishment bad behavior was not tolerated. Arguing with a teacher was absolutely not acceptable; you would be scolded, sent to the hall / principal or given detention. I'm just going to say one more thing on this subject. School is about more than learning facts and figures, a big part of it is learning to get along with other people, both your peers and the people in charge. It is at least as important as academics if not more so. It took me a long time to learn this because it did not come naturally to me, but once you emerge from the academic bubble you have to get along with people or things will go badly for you. Now I see people in their twenties on the internet having public meltdowns because they never learned how to deal with adversity. It's a mess, and I don't see things getting any better.

i can agree with that BUT there are many of use who are popular and smart enough to be passing classes with flying colors and for those people they should be allowed to play chess when they are done with their work or during any other free time they have.

I come from the era when the teacher would smack you across the hands with a ruler.  And if you ever got sent to the principles office?  That put the fear of God in you.  Now that would be unthinkable.  But it also explains why we have so many kids that whine, complain, and act out.  We have one of the greatest technological creations ever in the internet.  It allows the entire knowledge of the known universe to be at our fingertips.  And what do we do?  We complain we cant play chess at school.  I miss the old days.

EDIT:  And from what I have seen from the public school system.  I pray for my grand children.

Doesn't matter. We can't spell  or get grammar right anyway. Woe is us.

Does it really matter? You know what he or she is saying. This is not a formal essay, is it?
