In the French line 6. bxc3 Ne7 7. Qg4 O-O 8. Bd3 why 8. ... c4 is not played?

h4 has a few points as a matter of fact.

1. Confuse your opponent

2. Try to castle queenside and attack on the king side

3. Control the g5 square.
Without understanding the move, you won't be able to defend against it.

It is also a factor that a move does not confuse me more than my opponent. 1. h4 would do so.

I think somewhat more serious is 1. b4. I somehow always lose against this move.

Btw, i wont hold it against you if you fess up and admit you've been talking out of your depth. Its your combination of being bad at chess + talking big that really puts the others off, i think you can cure this by doing either one of two things, which are

1) Get good at chess, so we'll put up with your bluster, OR

2) Stop talking like you know stuff when you really dont.

It's okay. I forgive you. The world appearances can be very deceptive sometimes ;).

These are just for me, because I feel hurt by your pejorative claims. Denouncing people for their rating and even for their ideas if they have something important to say may be considered offensive. Right now I feel offended because you do not respect me. In the future I would prefer if you had a little more respect for my analysis and respect for my feelings. Thanks.

Anyone really interested in this line of the french with 8... c4 should get GM Moskalenko's book : " The Wonderful Winawer .  He covers this move in his chapter on the Warsaw variation 7 ... 0-0 .  He gives white the advantage in this line .

I doubt there are any GMs with no engines .

Pulpofeira

Probably Lilienthal was the last one.

Modern GM chess is like marathon races on roller skates.

I would install an engine in my brain if I could. Might even beat Magnus Carlsen.

Same here!Smile Wouldn't an endgame tablbase be helpful as well?

adumbrate

Probably not impossible. However, that would be considered lame. Your brain is your engine, use it, don't implement cheats.

adumbrate

Yeah it is.

If you are looking for an interesting side line, I like playing 6...Qc7.

I this game the c4 theme is played. White is obviously not aware of every bit and piece of theory, still reaches an advantageous position which lasts for quite a while.

Nevertheless white finds no crushing plan and loses in time trouble.

watcha

Not exactly a c4 game, still a Winawer French.

White again has the advantage for a long time. No crushing attack. An 'ingenious' move instead: 19. Ra6.

watcha

In this game almost everything has come up discussed in this thread.

In the game below against the advance variation the Bd7, Rd8 maneuver is played. White realizes that this may cost them their ls bishop, a3 is played to prevent Nb4. As it was said in this thread, now c4 makes sense, followed by Na5. The black king walks to the queenside, where it is safe. White is not aware that their only chance is a kingside attack ( as also was said ) and loses.
