Chess earned me some money (I used to teach at chess clubs), and I met a few World Champions (Tal, Karpov) and Candidates (Larsen).
I wouldn't say it helped my social life... chess is a somewhat antisocial activity.

Chess made me find my passion in life. It changed my life and I enjoy studying openings/middlegames/endgames. I went from a boy who came back from school only to watch TV all day to studying chess and setting a goal to reach 2000 Elo soon.

It's my main retirement activity. I hope it delays Alzheimer's and it's fun. If life becomes frustrating, I can always go knock Martin-bot around for a bit. My family likes my chess because it is a source of relatively cheap gifts. It's a great way to bond with my grandson and get me out of my wife's hair.
