In Which Other Games or Sports Do Players Resign?

There are many threads on here about the etiquette of when to resign in chess. Lets not re-ignite that debate here. Instead I ask which other games and sports can you name in which players resign?

I come from the world of epée fencing, where the very idea of resigning is completely unknown. You fight each point until the President calls "halt", and all bouts are fought until the end. Sometimes a bout is cut short due to injury (or death!), but that's fortunately very rare. Fencing is a very safe sport.

Chess is fairly unusual in having this concept or resigning. Even a game of Monopoly is generally played until the end, no matter how much one player is dominating play.

Which games and sports can you think of in which players voluntarily acknowledge a losing position and resign?

Fighters have been known to "throw in the towel" which is the same as resigning 🤔

Yes, in Boxing and in MMA, resigning is a common occurrence.

Either their corner throws in the towel, or the fighter himself "taps out", resigning the fight.

Snooker.

In poker it's called folding.

Yes, Boxing and MMA appear to be good examples. I guess it's common in combat sports. Do fighters often "throw in the towel" in towel when they're well behind on points, or only when more or less physically unable to continue?

In Poker, players "fold" when they don't want to meet a call on a hand, but this case seems less like a resignation. I don't know much about poker, however.

Boxing is pretty bad because your team can make you resign without even asking you.

Oh, I see NikkiLikeChikki just said poker while I was typing.

Hedgehog1963: Snooker? Really?  Interesting.  I didn't realise that was part of the game, but then I've not really seen much of it.

@kingattacker3 WWE isn´t a real sport. It´s more like theatre.

Boxing is a popularity contest.

Hedgehog1963: just looked up the snooker rules - "a player resigns because there are not enough balls on the table to make up for the opponent's score" - that makes sense. I really haven't watched snooker since I was tiny.

I thing a clarification would be 'resign while still having a chance of winning or drawing'(even if it would require a major mistake on your opponent's part)

Lots of youth sports have a "mercy rule" that can end the game early if one team is completely crushing the other.

How embarrassing for the kids, glad I live in UK where we love underdogs.

They would still have a change to draw or win, even if there are not enough points on the table to make up the difference. If their opponen makes a foul  by not hitting the correct ball, penalty points are awarded. Therfore, a player usually plays on if a singel foul plus the remaining points on the table can make up the difference and try to force a foul by creating difficult situations for their opponent. But once multiple fouls are required to make up the difference, players often resign as it is unlikely that a profissional opponent makes multiple fouls.

Add Golf and Tennis to the list.
