In which "U" section I need to sign in? For an OTB tournaments

If say I were to participate in OTB tournament and want it to win prize $ , but I never played any FIDE tournaments, so I don't have an official rating.

Which "U" section do I belong to? Do I choose one or do they choose for me or how this works?

Normally you are entered into the lowest section if you have a national rating normally they will convert that to FIDE normally that is taken at par or national - 100 pts for most countries

If you don't have a rating you don't belong to any Underclass as you are unrated and most tournaments only allow you to win the unrated prize or a Top placing prize if one large section

chess.com ratings have no value for OTB tournaments sad.png

you may also want to be reading up on FIDE tournament rules ie) touch move, handling the clock, proper draw claims, etc.

Don't worry I know all the rules(better then most tournament people actually). Can give you an example, which most won't answer. What happens if during a game you or your opponent realizes, that your queen and king switched up the wrong way?  Most don't know this rule and probably need help from an arbiter, you probably don't know either.

You are talking to me like I never played OTB chess before, did I say that?

I've played more games OTB , then number of games in here and I've played quite a bit here. And yes I've been playing tournaments(just locals in Russia , open tournaments, but without official ratings). Any one can come put $ and play, from begginer to Alexander Kostenuik and her husband same tournament and you can win some small prizes etc...

I just never played any official tournaments or with big prize $

I've heard someone on Internet mentioned one open tournament, where someone participated in section U1800 or U1600 I can't remember and won prize $ like 13000 dollars , which is alot .  So I got curious and because I don't have any official ratings I was wondering which section I have to go to and what prizes and entry fees would be like?

I understand 7.2.1 New as of January 1, 2018 happy.png

The fun part came when digital clocks and increments made 10.2 outdated and recording under the 5-minute rule.

I T.D tournaments here in Canada not FIDE  just CFC, Most tournaments stopped UNR's from winning class prizes to prevent $13K  winning as above, as they are not in any "U" class.

Good Luck in you 1st FIDE tournament happy.png

It doesn't have to be FIDE rated tournament, I'm just interested In  prize $ and because I don't have a rating, which section I have to go to

GMPatzer

Okay, my answer is you can play in any section the organizer allows, however, I was giving you the reasons why you may not be allowed to play in certain sections as an unrated player, It was designed to stop players from unfairly winning class section prizes ie) strong players pretending they don't have rating and winning large cash prizes in U sections that's why you may be restricted to an unrated prize only

So, what is the correct answer to the king-queen switch?

I was actually involved in an USCF-rated game where my opponent's king and queen were placed in the wrong squares. We didn't discover this until after many moves. The official ruling from a national TD (a high TD in USCF) was to continue the game because too many moves have passed and our notation wasn't complete enough (which isn't uncommon, as these mistakes pretty much only happen to tournament beginners).  And the worse part of the ruling was that since he had touched his king (he was preparing to castle), he must move his king... and there's no good place to put it without losing a piece.  Since it wasn't really his fault (the board was pre-setup that way), I offered him a draw and he accepted it.  We continued to finish that game after and played another game later in the lobby.

Because you are unrated, you are at the most disadvantaged group at a major tournament in terms of prize money. Most tournaments only allow an unrated player to compete in the open prize because of the possibility of sandbagging.  The best method is to play at lower level tournaments and establish a rating then go to the expensive tournament, if winning money is the goal. This way, you can qualify for the reserve prizes and possibly also the open prize.  BTW, a prize of $13k is unheard of for non-invitational chess tournaments around here.  Maybe Russia is more generous in chess tournaments.

Actually, FIDE rules as of January 1, 2018  (USCF has different rules from FIDE handbook

the rule you state only applies to colours being reversed which is 10 plies for each player

7.2.1

If during a game it is found that the initial position of the pieces was incorrect, the game shall be cancelled and a new game shall be played.

7.2.2 If during a game it is found that the chessboard has been placed contrary to Article 2.1, the game shall continue but the position reached must be transferred to a correctly placed chessboard.
7.3

If a game has started with colours reversed then, if less than 10 moves have been made by both players, it shall be discontinued and a new game played with the correct colours. After 10 moves or more, the game shall continue .

ESP-918

7.3 is correct

GMPatzer

The game today shouldn't be continued if the initial position is incorrect (7.2.1) even after 10 moves have been completed, this rule 7.3 only applies to colours being reversed, This rule has been in effect for at least the last 2 revision of the rules.
