Inconsitant ratings

My play is extremly inconsistant. Sometimes I can play really well against someone higher rated...othertimes I lose against much lower rated players. This is especailly true in blitz 5 minute. I can get to 1000 and then a couple games later be down to 850. I don't understand why this happens and it makes me feel like I'm getting worse. I wonder if I'm in my head a bit or if this is just natural. My rating is soooo low. I've been playing chess for a little over a year and I'm still not very good. It is quite frustrating.

I play my best in the morning a few hours after I wake up. I was able to beat a much higher rated player on a different chess site. It isn't just like occasionally either sometimes I'm just a lot more sharp playing chess and I'm more involved and latley I've been very passively playing. Lately I haven't been playing almost any 30 min. Maybe I should quit 5 min chess for a while.

Anyway, is there anything I can do to fix my inconsitant play and improve my rating? Thanks.

EDIT: This should be called inconsitant play. Not inconsitant ratings. Sorry for the confusion.

Just play the best moves all the time. SimpleSmile

I don't know about inconsistent play, but to improve your rating, between each session of games review 1 (or all) of the games you played and study something.

The thing is sometimes I do this and then sometimes I just don't do it once in an entire game. lol

Also be objective about your games.

Why did the winner win? Why did the loser lose? You beat a higher rated player, good job, feels good. Now what did you do right and what did you do wrong?

Same for when you lose against a lower rated player. And it wont just be one thing wrong. Don't just skip to 1 position and say "oh well I missed he was attacking that rook so I was way behind in material." Maybe by that point you were already worse. Look for when the game first started going wrong. Which positions were you uncomfortable with during the game? Maybe you were winning and uncomfortable, unsure how to continue. etc.

I would say that all chess players play sometimes better and sometimes worse. Just look at Caruana and the way he played in the 2014 Sinquefield Cup and the 2015 Tata Steel Chess Tournament. I quite enjoy Danny Rensch`s Bullet Brawls show and it is the same case. It goes without saying that our play is influenced by how we feel, whether we are knackered and so on. I think you should just keep on playing without worrying too much about your ratings. Nevertheless, it seems to me that some people cannot be really good at Bullet and Blitz chess. I will always have better results when I have more time to think and do not have to play under time pressure. I do not mean I will play better chess which is true about every player but opponents I can beat in standard OTB tournaments will likely destroy me in OTB blitz. And the same is true in online chess.

Winning and not knowing what to do is a huge issue. I was playing a game and was up 11. yep 11 and blundered my way to a checkmate where i was trolled. It is a very strange, annoying and new thing I'm working through.

Inconsistent :/ Sorry for my spelling.

In blitz anything can happen so that explains it , play more slow games, and don't play too many games in a day because it can affect your play . quality over quantity , like leiph says review your games .
