inflated and deflated rating pools

I am not allowed to discuss competitor sites so I will be careful, but I have a question about ratings. Chess.com uses a different rating system. I play on a different site that uses glecko-2 rating system. My rating on my real chess.com account is about 300 - 400 points lower than on that different site I play on. Why chess.com ratings so deflated? Why are the competition on chess.com difficult to beat? On the other site, I kick ass all the time and my rating is very high there unlike here on chess.com.

You are not really rated here at all. You have only played 1 game.

The 1200 rating assigned to you when you joined is arbitrary. Play 50 games and you will find out your rating.

Read about chess ratings and you will understand that ratings are not absolute measure, the way that 100C is the temperature that water boils at. Instead, they are relative measures that only allow you to compare yourself with others at the same site and in the same time control group.

You can, however, look at where you stand relative to other players within that group.

Different sites have a different average player strength. Imagine a site where only masters and above play, so then the masters would be the ones rated under 1000 for example, and the GMs may only be a little above 1200. It's relative like notmtwain points out.

It also depends on what the site sets as the starting rating. A site could easily start its players at 100 or 10000. Choosing to make your average rating higher or lower than competitors is also a strategy for site owners. High ratings probably make  your users feel good. But lower ratings, or ratings closer to OTB standards may bring more respect.

Now you have edited your post to state that you do not understand why a second account of yours is 300-400 points lower rated here than somewhere else.

I should point out that you are only allowed one account (and they will close both).

Again, it doesn't matter that your rating is higher elsewhere. It doesn't mean that you play better over there or worse over here.

If there are enough regular users spanning a wide scope of skill levels at proportions similar to those of fide or the uscf, then the ratings will be fairly accurate when comparing players. On the other hand, the specific ratings for individual players will be determined by the amount of points in circulation among all the players. The total number of points in circulation is determined largely by active players and is affected by users joining/quitting. It is up to the site staff to create the conditions for joining the site and periodically monitor/adjust ratings in order to have the numbers as high or low as they want. If people joined, played, and left in the same manner as they did the fide or uscf organizations then the ratings would require little adjustment with proper initial conditions. If the makeup and behavior of users markedly varied in comparison to fide/uscf members then maybe it would require more adjustments.

Also worth mentioning is the fact the other site has much few members, but I noticed that more people are rude and make more stupid comments in live chat during a game, much more common than on chess.com, and you don't have the abillity to disable chat. For example, on the other site this is what was posted in chat in a couple of my games opponent: pussy players me: what do u mean me: pls stop the stupid comments, this is just a online blitz game, opponent: just mean oppponent: are bad opponent: and winning on blundr Florp: lawl Florp: nice time win Florp: fag me: who cares me: u get life now, its just a game blitz I didn't realize it was my fault that my opponent blundered?

Cursing and admitting to having two accounts. Not the best plan for sticking around.

But nearly all online chess ratings are inflated compared to OTB. So chess.com being lower than other sites is actually better. If you just want a site to stroke your ego then why not start your own site and add 1,000 points to every rating?

Do you have fake boobs? Does that boost your ego? 1,000 points is going a little bit too far with it. I am talking 300 - 400 points. How accurate is a chess.com rating with all of the engine use going on?

What the hell?

If you are talking about lichess ... ratings are inflated there by about 300 points or so. ICC's rating is similar to chess.com.

That said, chess.com's standard rating is inflated too. Blitz ratings here are probably the most realistic representation of people's playing strength...

That inflation is the main reason I play here. Gotta keep my ego in check, I'm not an 1800 player and I know it.

I wish the other site would have the ability to disable chat. Just today I recieved more chat abuse because I didn't accept a draw. I expected this type of behaviour from chess.com, not on that other site.
