this site offers free turn based and free live time chess with fantastic customer support from the administration.  It is also computer friendly, well organized, clear, neat, and has many players at different skill levels.  I couldn't ask for more, so was happy to pay my $30 year which is 8 cents a day.

If ou don't want to pay don't pay.  You can still play chess.  Also a limited amount of your stats are free.  I think they say the last 30 days.  Also you were told that it would be a nonfree item later.  It is only a cost because it is a cost to the owners and they can not give away everything because eventually their costs will cause the site to shutdown or not be as good of quality site.  Also noone is forcing you to stay.  Find a another site, but from all the comments I have heard this is the best.  I would agree with that.

Hey Willie!

I see you've got yourself a Plat.membership.  Good work that man!

Did you just turn or the charm with Mrs KW or make some wild promise i.e. always leaving the seat on the toilet down after you've used it - forever and ever?

I'm sure other members who are still trying to pluck up the courage to ask their Mrs if it is ok to have a membership - pretty please... would find the advice useful.

  1. Well to sum it up, Free is free unless you use the term indian giver.
  2. there is MSN and then MSN premium
  3. .org .net and then .com -free things giving, free should not be added or charged  upon  in any line of buisness, it is  just good common sense for honest buisness practices. The rest is just SCAM/SPAM

"Well to sum it up..."

You summed it up quite nicely. Unfortunately, it doesn't make a lick of sense.

This does not address the central topic here, but I just want to clarify something:

Lu1965's abbreviated, Emoticon infested, and acronym dropping post is in no way reflective of American English.  (No offense Lu!)

That is all.

i have to tell you all though, the people here have been really helpfull to me. as a student i dont have alot of money to pay for a site like this. but i think the quality of this site is worth paying for. i posted a topic on the forums about "student discounts" and they took 10 bucks off a gold membership for me. im sure they would do the same for some of you. 20 bucks a year for a great community is a small price!!

Lucky you, pawnpower.  :)  If I haven't saved up for a lifetime membership by the time I go to college, I'll remember to ask for a student discount while I'm in college.  For now, though, I can pay from my allowance.  Laughing

I keep forgetting to get a membership. I would get one even if everything was free.  Not having a membership hasn't affected me in any way. I just wish i would have done it before i lost the games in my archive.    I'm gonna go get one right now.

Nothing was ever "lost". They were just inaccessable. Once you buy the membership you regain access to ALL your games. :) And yes, for the record, although it was stated many times, every page that is now limited to premium members WAS marked by a neon blue box on the right that stated that the feature may become premium in the future. We have always promised that what is free now will always stay free, because to do otherwise would be company suicide.

I think that Erik and his team were perfectly within their rights to start charging for a premium membership.  First of all, everything you need is still free.  Second, they warned you.  Third, they have families to feed.  For the first six months of chess.com's existance, they were paying for it out of their own pockets!  Depending on what service they use to host it, that could have cost over $500, and would have really started to suck their pockets dry if they kept paying for it much longer.  How would you (aka anyone who thinks charging for chess.com is immoral) like it if you worked on something for several hours every day, fixing bugs, updating features, keeping the peace in the community, besides having another job (which I'm guessing you do, Erik, although I don't recall you ever saying so), and you had to pay for it?  I doubt you'd like that at all.  If you were the one who created an amazing site like this, you would like someone to pay for it and help support it.
