I don't know, is it?
Is 1500 a good rapid rating on chess.com?
1500 is like 95%. You would be better then 95% of all chess players here. Given how strong all the players are here that's pretty good even if you have played many yrs.
its more then 95%
Yo! I am 1547 rapid and I have a percentile of like 97.2%!
I started about 1½ years ago. I think that if you are 1500 after playing for like 5 years, then that is bad.
Also, it is all relative.
(Sry for replying a year late!)
There are different ways of playing chess.
One is: Learn the rules, move pieces, learn a few openings without any theory and just build up your game and react to crazy stuff your opponent do. Thats what most people do at 1k elo to 1200 elo.
After that people start to learn different openings to have more variety and even have the one or other strat they like to play. 1200 - 1500.
Above that people need to study - or play long enough to know where some basic traps are, and how to play them out. 1500-1800.
1800-2000 Needs to study, know endgame basics, know how to transform to get into the endgame, know wich trades are good for you and wich are less likely to be etc..
Its all about how much commitment you put into the game, and what you expect from it. If you study chess 5 years full time and are at 1500 elo? Thats bad. But seriously who does that ? % of the player and they are faar above. Dont compete yourself to others, compete yourself to your past. If you want to improve. If you dont care about the elo keep playing for fun, limittest and see how faar you get while enjoying it and not feeling the need to throw your PC out of the window after losing a game cuz you blundered.
I would consider 2000 a good rating for people who already played for 4 or 5 years
but you have been playing for 5 years and are 1348 rapid???
1500 is great if you're playing for fun. If you're actively competing, it's ok. If you want to earn money playing chess, it's terrible. I think most of us here are playing for fun and aren't looking into making chess our main job, so it's a great rating.
Think of it this way: if you're playing on a semi pro soccer team, compared to most people you're great, compared to your teammates, you're ok, and compared to pro teams you suck. 1400 and above is essentially the chess equivalent of semi-pro soccer.
I'm 1500 rapid & just about to get serious again after taking a long break away. I'm going with Ginger GM as my teacher this time so look out for "Harry, the h pawn"![]()

thats disrespectful to semi pro footballers. i would say NM is semi pro
There are less than 20,000 NM and above in the World, according to a post on Chess.com
There are roughly 130,000 professional soccer players according to Chat GPT. There are 600 million chess players, so even if half of the World plays soccer, that still makes NM a pro in chess, whether you think it's disrespectful to soccer players or not, that's reality.

I mean probably half the world does play football, yeah. A lot of the pro footballers you mentioned are actually semi pro because they don't make a living off it
No offence but probably half the 600 million chess players are above 1500
Chess.com ratings do not reflect OTB players

There are over million active chess players on chess.com so it's a valid sample. The average rating for bullet is 580. For those of us who are fluent in basic statistics, this completely invalidates your argument. And those of us who aren't, shouldn't be making claims that 300 million chess players are above 1500, with no factual evidence to back it up.
