Is 1.e4 for heros and 1.d4 for cowards? elaborate.

for me, Yes. I mean 1.d4 is so boring (slow game, positional play etc.) ...but 1.e4 is so tactical and win or lose - u enjoy ur game!

crazycolorz

Actually after 1.d4 the Dutch defense can be somewhat aggressive for black as he can get an attack on the kingside.
But yes, I prefer 1. e4 myself.

Just about every line of the semi-slav is as sharp as the ruy lopez, a very positional opening.

Well, in my opinion all mainline d4 openings are more tactical than main line e4 openings.

Problem is beginners who don't know the mainlines think d4 is passive:

Radical_Drift

I thought this d4 game was incredible and exciting.

I usualy avoid 1.e4, mainly because the man that taught me chess over 4 years (one game per week) was awesome with it. Either way. My two favourite games vs him were with 1.d4. I also like to throw in 2. f4 (sort of belated 'Birds') occassionally. I call it 'Queens cousin'. Not so boring..?

There are no heroes in a state of nature :c

1. e4 might be for heroes, but 1. h4 is for superheroes!

Xmcp

alantoby, when u throw in 1.d4 (if 1. ...d5) 2.f4, you going to obviously play d3 and make it the stonewall attack, right?

Xmcp

theunsjb, why play 1.h4 ? (I hope you not going to tell me that it's because you want to take out the rook early #bored)

Boring? That depends on which d4 opening and the variation of it. And the option to get out of the book will make it anything but boring.

Sunofthemorninglight

1 e4 all the way!  (especially if you're right handed)

royalbishop

I play the field. By that if i am in a tournament in another city and i get the idea they are a bunch of d4 players i am going with e4 all day long. Reason being they know less about it. If they played e4 openings more than d4 openings they have a better idea what i am thinking during the game. It works like a charm.

But if in a mixed field of e4 and d4 players I play what i feel comfortable with at the time or what i prepared/studied to play. 1 Nf3 is an option if you want to flip the script.

By that you must mean when you play e4 you are more like to see the Sicilian against a strong player or the higher you go up the rank. Gets boring after a while.... great merits.

"each"

Complaining about the Sicilian is like complaining about d4 Nf6, it's just the first move...
