Ignoring the snark, here is the truth. Anand is great, however he is overshadowed by Kasparov. Think about it without Kasparov, Karpov is world champion about 8 years longer AND Anand is champion about 8 years longer. The the question would be who was greater Karpov or Anand, but as it is I believe most would say Kasparov was better than both.

Now as a person, Anand is the embodiment of what a champion should be, humble, gracious, honest and loyal. That fact that he is an inspiration to all of India is probably worth more to Anand than any additional chess laurels.

Here is the truth , you have never studied chess seriously. Ask one who did and he will tell you how great Anand is.

Ignorants all they know , is Kasparov,  Fischer and Carlsen , nothing else. For the rest, players like Anand were as great as Kasparov. because they have studied his games, something ignorants never did. Ignorants all they know is some fancy Kasparov sacrifices. But chess is much more than that. Appreciating players like Anand , Karpov and Petrosian has to do with understanding chess in a deeper level. They are not players for online patzers.

Not sure what Ive done to you, but your like some crazed cyber-stalker. What are you my ex-wife? Gretchen is that you?

As far as I can see your the King of Patzers, the absolute worse kind, the kind that doesnt realize he is one.  I especially LOVE the way you inflate your rating by only playing players well below your rating, that will get you respect and kudos!

So next time you decide to continuously be rude for no apparent reason, remember an old man bent you over his knee and virtually spanked that heinie...

I wasn't rude at all. Not calling you an idiot was actually extremely polite! I am rarely that nice!

You are talking for things you don't understand. All your knowledge about Anand is what wikipedia says.

Yes I am the King of patzers but I can at least appreciate players like Anand. That makes you a joker and quite a failed one.

Don't flatter yourself, I can't be your ex wife. I'm sure she can't stand you and she wants to stay away from you as every other woman that met you. Good luck finding the next future ex! Until then maybe try to study a little , who knows you might learn something. I believe in God and miracles do happen!

tsk tsk...another child with anger issues, let me guess, "if only everyone else would recognize your greatness" or "how dare someone have an opinion different from my own"

Here, have a glass of warm milk and take a nap...

On second thought Ill take the high road, I honestly would feel like crap if I upset someone. So your right, I dont and never will appreciate chess to your level. If you would, kindly quit jumping on every post I do and posting aggressive comments directed at me, in other words do your own thing mate!

The thing with Anand is that he very conclusively is not better than some players. He is not better than Kasparov, not better than Carlsen and perhaps almost conclusively not better than Karpov either. He is definitely better than Kramnik, Topalov and anyone else to have played the game in the past 25 yrs, besides Kasparov, Carlsen and Karpov to some extent.

With Karpov there is a case for a tie, with Anand, but Karpov could be said to be better as well.

So what that means is Vishy is the 4th (perhaps 3rd), best player in his era, but no real opportunities of being ranked higher than that.

Now when you start doing cross era comparisons no one really think much of the 4th greatest player.

So if you say compare Fischer with modern day players, the very thought that Fisher would be worse than the 4th best player in his era, seems counter-intuitive.

Same is true of most greats in the past. As a result he tends to hang around lower in the pecking order when such lists are done.

I think by the theory of Standing on the shoulder of giants logic - VIshy would take out anyone in the pre-Karpov era, including Fishcer. Modern day players are just better than their predecessors.

I would place the list as -

Kasparov

Carlsen

Karpov

Vishy

Kramnik

FIscher

Tal

as the top 7.

Ignorance and stupidity are sad but not upsetting. Don't flatter yourself , you are unable to upset anyone!

Anand's games are very instructive, especially on Sicilian and Semi-slav as black.

What can we learn from Kasparov's games ??

StinkingHyena

Nadjorf and Grunfeld I believe were Kasparovs areas of contribution (though compared to previous generations, today's players are at a disadvantage when it comes to contributions).

It seems that there are people who don't understand what they read. The question is not whether Anand is a great player (the answer is obviously yes), but if he is one of the greatest. The answer is NOOOOOOOO. The greatest are those who dominated their era: Morphy, Lasker, Capablanca, Fischer, Karpov, Kasparov, Carlsen. Anand wasn't even number one of Fide ratings when he was wc, except for a few months

In April 2006 Anand became the fourth player in history to pass the 2800 Elo mark on the FIDE rating list, after Garry Kasparov, Vladimir Kramnik and Veselin Topalov

Anand won three consecutive Advanced Chess tournaments in Leon, Spain, after Garry Kasparov introduced this form of chess in 1998, and is widely recognized as the world's best Advanced Chess player, where humans may consult a computer to aid in their calculation of variations.

Anand won the 2017 World Rapid Chess Championship.

They have done research on all the world champions and studying 25.802 games and 2 million positions. They used Stockfish 6 set on 3150 rating on this study. Who did fewest mistakes and etc. The rank was: 1. Carlsen 2. Kramnik 3. Fisher 4. Kasparov 5. Anand 6. Khalifman 7. Smyslov 8. Petrosjan

Means Anand is in top five according to an engine, and also I claimed that Anand is one of the greatest players of all time, not the top player of History.
