Is Auto-vacation for paid users unfair?

Autovacation isn't unfair -- it's simply a more convenient way to enable a feature everyone here has.

If there's at unfairness, it's that non-premium members must have no games in which it's their move before they can turn vacation on. Autovacation may highlight this difference, but in and of itself it's not the issue.

Yes, I concur with that statement. All titled players are honorary premium members of this site.  Titled players are also eligible to be "super administrators" of teams too, something which is currently only open to premium members.

Now thats unfair, they should have to pay just like everyone else. They are like celebrities that get paid to go to parties, or boxers that get paid even if they lose. Thats advertising I guess.

johnmusacha

Well boxers are getting paid just for appearing in the fight at that level.  The winner just gets a bigger of the prize money.  It's the same in pro chess, you must agree.  I mean, if you're at the very top levels of any sport you kinda deserve to be compensated in some way, win or lose.  If it were any other way, a lot of talented athletes would be shut out of participating in matches, since they would be too worried about making enough money to live on.

Now, boxers getting paid to lose has quite a established history in the sport -- but that's another story.

Yes a premium member can create a group and be the super admin but non premium members can be an admin just not super admin (a lot of kids were finding a way to fiddle the system with that getting their friends to create a team and making them SA)

i didnt know that one either, I've been thinking about paying the money just so I can do chess mentor, Has this feature helped any of you premium members improve more rapidly than from buying and studying books?

Conquistador

Unless you were a free rider that was grandfathered into the system and refused to give up their SA status ;)

I always set my gane preference not to pause  my  game-however vacation time is always imposed

corrijean

A reduction doesn't seem unreasonable. Right now the amount of vacation allocated does seem a bit excessive.

I used 3 weeks of auto vacation while away, but that's relatively the only time that I've used it and I still lost multiple games on time (some which I was completely winning). I agree that sometimes it's abused, but vacation has always been used in correspondence. Perhaps better regulations are needed, such as joeydvivre suggested where you aren't allowed to play live chess while on vacation, or a regulation where you can only use it once a month or so. Stuff like that, but auto-vacation should not be completely destroyed.

Rick56

Yes. It's absurd.

This site was started for and about chess. I don't believe the issue of vacation abuse has been addressed since I've been here (about 2 years). I've seen multiple threads about this, yet the site goes through a redesign prematurely, and seems to be more concerned about where members post pictures instead of this issue.

Dear sirs, my ancestors had to fight in the streets to get vacation. Now it is à right in Europe and nobody is going to take it away. We also refuse to work on à sunday.

nameno1had

I think this problem is easily solved by the option of each player to agree or not, to whether vacation can be used prior to each game. I know some tourneys are already this way.

Dear Joey, do you have couple of hours. It all started with Julius Caesar who wrote in de bello gallico that of all the Gaulles, the belgians were the bravest. Hè was talking about ambiorix, not to be confused with Asterix.....

He'll just probably argue they weren't the same nation he was referring to...

I would personally rather try reasoning with a wall...I might actually convice the wall of the truth first because, due to Joey's education, he knows everything already...

bronsteinitz

Well then there was 1302, battle of the golden spurrs, Waterloo where à lot of the soldiers were belgian, THE first world war where my grandparents spent years in the trenches, in 1830 we kicked THE Dutch out and two weeks ago we did beat them at soccer 4-2'....... But i was referring to social struggles.

bronsteinitz

So you believe Caesar killed all the Belgians?

bronsteinitz

Ha! And don't forget that the only true chess champ of the world is Belgian: Houdini by Robert Houdart.

bronsteinitz

Yes, they are a proud tribe. Pity they have to go to bed. Tomorrow workie, workie....
