Is bad bishop always bad?

Avatar of Gomer_Pyle

Bad bishops are always called bad even if they are performing a good and useful function. The term "bad" just means that pawns are sitting on squares of the bishop's color. This can be bad if the pawns are hampering the bishop's play but good if they are supporting the bishop's play. Either way, the bishop is always called a bad bishop.

BlcScorpion why don't you just put up a post "How Do You Play Chess" and get all your questions answered?

What is your FIDE  and/or USCF rating ?

A bad bishop can be active or inactive . An active bad bishop isnt as bad as an inactive bad bishop . A good bishop can also be active or inactive , an active good bishop is better than an inactive good bishop and better than both the active and inactive bad bishop ! Surprised

Sometimes a bad bishop can see the error of his ways, undergo an epiphany and rise from the ashes to be converted to a great and glorious good bishop, while other times a good bishop can sadly fall by the wayside and allow corruption of his soul through the common vices of our times to become a bad bishop.

As was stated above a bad bishop can occasionally be a good idea. In particular at the end of the game a bad bishop may be the crucial way of protecting the base pawn of a pawn chain, such as if you are constructing a draw fortress.

a bad bishop can come good eventually, but it's not a given.

Been good. You? I have not been here in a while.  I came back because they're going to have rated USCF play here and the forums are always compelling & seductive.

Like people, many bad Bishops have the potential to be good.

Good to hear. I've been well but too busy lately to spend much time around here.
