Is being self taught good or bad?

I either do well because I'm so unorthodox or there are ppl that say that I suck for my rating.  So, is there a guild or anything on here for people that have supposedly relatively higher ratings but still are basically clueless as to proper openings and what not?

I would say you are a very very good chess player asking a very very very dumb question.   you're good at blitz too so it's not just being fast on the mouse. Smile

Hey, I'm FIDE Rated and self taught ( i took coaching only for about 4 months. ) It really doesn't make a difference if you study all the books.

I'm USCF 1701 and self taught with about a year of weekly tournaments. I gained 700 rating points in the last 5 months through weekly practice.

Probably a majority of chess players are self taught now. When you have unlimited resources on the internet like tactics trainers, GM games and much more it's very possible to acheive a good rating on your own.

If you want to take the next step and play chess seriously, at 2000+ levels then I would think it would be a good idea to get some kind of coaching

Vincero,

I really like the way you play. Don't start taking this game seriously and study....you'll get more outta it. Just play and know self-study brings a kinda creativity and contentedness (word ?)....Smile....anywayz (hehe) love you for this !

GM Julio Granda Zuñiga is very lazy (according to himself) with regards to opening preparation. You can notice by his openings that he is just trying his own ideas.

So, if you are still under 2700, you can keep using your own opening systems.

I think that ""lazy" at that level still means a lot of work!
