As a girl, from what I've seen in myself and other girls, the way a guy presents himself is extremely important in rating "attractiveness." I've never met him or seen him interact with people, but if he's friendly and projects confidence, I can see people thinking of him as attractive. But looking purely at pictures alone, I don't really see him as physically attractive. But I'd say his intellect is definitely something that's admirable and gives him a one-up on many other guys.
I do find him very attractive, but not for his fame 😊😊

If a woman volunteers an opinion as to whether a man is attractive or not, it doesn't matter what that opinion is: she finds him attractive.
It is hard to answer this question without being rude.
So first of all it has to be said: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
After making it clear. I try to analyze how I personally perceive his facial structures.
There is a facial imbalance in his facial third. While the midface is way too short, the chin is rather long. It kind of reminds me of Tom in Tom and Jerry when he gets deformity due to some violence.
Let me explain this effect a little bit more, before being called rude myself. His cheeks are turnt inwards, while he browridge is projected outwards. It gives him this "neanthertal" look that everyone was talking about. The lack of forward growth in his cheek area really throws one off because it isn't average in proportions.
Another point that is really inportant for his facial aesthetics is his jaw. While being large and massive, it lacks the angles and bone structures as say someone like the superman actor Henry Cavil. It isn't sharp nor contured. It has a roundness to it, which is not a good trait for men.
The second most important thing is the eye area. From a direct consequence of his sloping forehead. His eye are hooded weirdly. The eye itself is to narrow while shaped round. It is out of proportions, while not being "manly" enough". It has also a slight negative tilt.
Eyelid exposure is really good though on him.
Ergo: It is mostly his bonestructure which let him deviate from the conventional beauty. The inward outward thing could be uncanny. Yet he can still be considered unconventionally attractive. His polarizing look could explain his modeling.

As heterosexual I am not of course the best person evaluate these things :) The handsomeness of Carlsen is far away from someone, say, Hugh Jackman's (even his past pics when he was same age).
1. Everyone on that list is famous. IF any of those men were less famous or some random nobodies then they would not be on that list.
2. I think we already know the answer of this question. In my opinion women tend to find successful men more attractive than failed men. A man's SMV(sexual marketplace value) is directly tied to how much money he makes or how famous / influential he is. This is not true for women.
3. I don't think carlsen looks like a boxer
