Is chess a recognised sport?

"recognised" will always create a debate. think about soccer and how long it took to be a "recognised" sport in america, when the rest of the world was playing long before we ever caught on. then you'll have those who debate sport vs game...
personally, my answer is yes. it is.

It is recognised by the International Olympic Committee as a sport. There is no doubt chess is therefore a sport.

You can call chess a sport or not, and the rules never change.
Of course chess isn't a sport. Chess is a game, a sport requires some sort of athleticism and coordination. Exams are competitive, are exams sports? No, because they're all mental, just the same as chess.
The reason why they want chess to be called a sport is so it can get funding that is reserved for sport.

Chess is a competitive activity that is physically exhuasting when you spend so much energy on one game. Kind of like the spelling bee, in a way.
(In my opinion) it's a mental sport! 
Sports don't have to be physical to be, you know, a sport. It just depends on what you think, as it is a highly debated topic. I (usually) tend to stay away from debates about this, they tend to turn into arguments. Both sides have strong arguments, so choose your side.

The question is "is chess a RECOGNIZED sport", its recognized by the IOC, therefore it is a recognized sport. Is it a sport by dictionary definition? No, according to a quick google, physical exertion is specified. Should mental games be considered sports? That depends on who you ask, I will not give my opinion because I dont want to get into a argument.
The answer is still no. There are many, many examples already mentioned. Like Facebook, Craigslist, or even department stores, flea markets, second hand stores, etc. Go to any of them and buy a chess set. They are always listed under games and toys. Never sporting goods.
There are often exceptions to the rule, like maybe a store, somewhere on earth, that sells chess sets with sporting goods. But the vast majority of people recognize chess as a game, not a sport.
