no running is a sport so then by your logic it isn't
Is chess a sport?

Patriot can you stop with your dictionary. The definition of the word sport varies between sources. When there is a subjective opinion about things, then a group of people who consist of members representing different countries decide upon it, we will go by their decision not yours.
Many countries consider chess to be a sport. So if you go to their court of law, they will consider it to be a sport.
Sure, I can stop using the dictionary to define words. We all can, and do. But as I said before, what would you tell a judge or jury? Tell them to stop using the dictionary to define words like "innocent", "guilty", "judge" or "lawful". You can consider chess a sport, makes no difference to me. That doesn't change the fact that it isn't. You can believe a circle is a square, because they are both shapes. Makes no difference to me.
Remember, its not my decision on how the word sport is defined. Neither you nor I get to decide such things. If it were up to us, I would define "lottery winner" as me, not the person who actually won. Words have meaning, that's what the dictionary is for. If you dont like the definition of words, blame those responsible for defining them.
The word sport isn't defined by a sports organization. The word, and it's definition, were around LONG before your sports organization ever showed up. Besides, without even looking at the words they use, I'll bet they dont even define it, I'll bet they just suggest guidelines to be included in their politically biased organization.

Great post! Illuminating.
That you understand neither the processes in courts of law, nor the day-to-day practice of lexicographers is now abundantly clear.
It has become less surprising that you tiresomely repeat your mantra (the point acknowledged at the outset), while refusing to engage the substance of the argument.

Well that's because there isn't any substance to any argument. There is no question that chess is a game, but not a sport. The "argument" is just people who want to justify what they do. As someone else pointed out, the real question isn't whether or not chess is a sport, the real question is why do some people need to feel like it is a sport. They know it's not a sport, but they really, really want it to be, so they can be called sportsmen, athletes, etc.
I've also noticed not one single person has addressed my point. What would a judge or jury say? What could be proven in court? Do you HONESTLY believe a judge would for two seconds buy the argument that chess is an actual sport? Of course you dont. Nobody else does either.
There is no physical skill in chess. Period. Physical skill is needed for a sport. I dont make the rules on how words are defined. If someone believes chess is a sport, great. Tell it to the people who make dictionaries. Apparently they haven't got the memo yet.

I do not understand why you are reluctant to regard chess as a sport. Particularly because you persist in employing the usage of a dictionary. The physical realm is not limited--and this assertion is made as per any dictionary you choose- -to a premise that excludes the mind, not to mention what chess makes necessary with regard to one's hands. You wish to play semantics, play fair. should sport be defined by physical activity? How could you deny chess's demand for human anatomy?
This whole thing reminds me of when a meathead attempted to explain to moi that baseball was not a real sport because not enough, "physical exertion" was expelled.
In sum what you and he have attempted to state is that chess is not a sport because no one's nose is broken playing. You might merely need to wait until after you beat me. lol Then you may tend to be more inclined to reference chess a sport!

It depends on what you would define a sport as. Sure, chess doesn’t require you to be PHYSICALLY active, but it does require you to be MENTALLY active. So in my opinion, yes.

if someone couldn't move a bone in their body couldn't play chess. They couldn't move the pieces, nor dictate them orally, as that requires your jawbones

Summary.

Another self righteous fool with a triple barrel name displayed for added effect! Ok so ..... WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT lol.... a person who couldn't move a bone in their body or even had no arms or legs could play an equally strong chess game. Does it matter how a person moves the chess pieces? 1 e4 is 1 e4. Can you play 1 e4 better than anyone else? No because if the pawn is 5mm away from centre of the square it's still 1 e4. LOL. Give it up damn fools who say chess has any physical requirements because it doesn't. FACT. Oh brain is physical too huh? Breathing is a sport then, all that physical movement and thinking is a sport because of that brain workout. Damn idiots lol. Please keep going tho as I know u will. It's funny.
Geez, are you going to be alright? Breath, look at the pretty flowers! They should be as appealing to a Semaine. Maybe posting opinions is how the UFC got its start?
Ciao

OK so if it ain't a sport then a basic rules such as sportsmanship isn't required. If it is a sport, then it is more than just a competition (or game) we as players should be doing what we can to honour it s reputation. Personally I would say no. Just like I would say no to bobsleigh in being a form of transport. This argument really does need to end as interesting as it is. Just like many phrases such as "chess is an art" no it s not it s just a metaphor. There are always going to be opinions and facts. As far as the facts are concerned, according to mathematics chess is a game played between two players where white has the advantage and the amount of moves are equal to 20 quintillion grains of sand.
