Is Chess a sport?

The wheels on the bus go ‘round and ‘round….

It is really a linguistic argument. Why do you people care so much if chess can be called a sport or not? Chess is chess, it is a game that can be played competitively. Just enjoy it.

Okay, that got me.

Mostly because sports get more money, promotions, help and privileges from governmnet than non-sports. It would be fine if sports only were activities that promote health and well being, then the whole "physical" part would make sense, but since some sports like motor and precision sport probably has less benefits than going for a slow walk it becomes a question of "why not us too?". 

And some people, like me, like category "mind sport" where you use the physical part of your body called the brain. Because sport make it sound more serious than competition.

In my opinion Chess is definitely a sport. Even though it doesn’t help one get physically in shape. It sharpens the mind. And multiple studies have shown that people who play chess not only have a higher IQ then those that don’t. But also it expands  a persons mind to be able to retain more information and it improves ones memory. AND EVERY chess grandmaster will tell you to stay in good physical shape. Because with an unhealthy body. It can seriously effect a persons mental health and therefore can effect a persons capacity to play well in chess.

It's not a sport. It's a useless but sometimes fun waste of brain spaces.

Ah yes, the great workout that one would get from wonderful sports as darts, curling, rifle shooting and driving cars. At least nerds seems to understand that sport != healthy fitness workout, even if both often overlap each other.
