Guess that didn't work!

It sure did, now the thread is derailed and we are not debating chess as a sport!

Ahhh, tricky. Ok, back to it then, lets start with a statement.

Chess is a sport.

Edit: yes the statement is ironic.

Nice try buddy

Look, as soon as they remove golf from the ''sport list'', I will remove chess from there.

I couldn't care less if chess is a sport or not but I am in a vendetta with the entire golf-playing population, because on the German TV they interrupted the 100 meters sprint to show the audience the golf-player walking... WALKING!!!

after playing chess you can be more exhausted than after playing football)

People are COMPLETELY missing my point. I would like to once again state my original conviction, which is that the only thing being debated is the definition of "sport". Consider the age-old question, "If a tree falls in a forest...". Two people might give two different answers, and yet, they are merely using different definitions of "sound". Bob, who is convinced that the correct answer is "yes", defines sound as sound WAVES. Alice, who holds the opposite view, defines it as the internally generated experience of sound. Alice and Bob make the same prediction, their understanding of physical reality is the same. It's just a word, and words have fluid definitions. This is obviously comparable to the argument at hand.

Physical is mentioned in every definition of sport from a reputable source. Couch dwellers trying to pretend they do sports wont change that.

If that's the accepted definition then it's settled.  I wouldn't go so far as to call chess players "couch dwellers" though.  I read that it took Giri 7 hours to win his latest game, and I know after I've played a couple of 90/30 games in OTB tournaments, I usually get a better night sleep afterward than in a while.  So it can be tiring, but may not necessarily be sport.

heyRick

I saw these two IM's playing 1/2 bullet on a giant chessboard where the pieces average two feet in height. They were really getting a workout. I would say that was definitely a sport.

Those who say that playing something which demands physical effort through the mind isn't somehow physical are quite funny people.

Understanding of semiotic processes is not a strength of the populace, it seems.

MrKornKid

Not a sport.

Chess is the mental equivalent to boxing.

ImmaLetchuFinnish

It is the greatest sport your brain will ever play.

I always thought that it was the mental equivalent of American football.  The pawns are your offensive linemen, the knights are kinda like tight ends, the bishops and rooks are wide receivers, the queen is your star running back and the king is your quarterback.   You are the head coach, of course.

Short answer: it depends on how you define sport.

JuergenWerner
Chess I'd a sport and a game. Darts, billiards, poker, table tennis, badminton, air hockey, and shuffle board are both sports and games at the same time also...

Actually(by definition) it requires a 'physical' skill to play Darts, billards, table tenis, badminton, air hockey, and shuffle board.  This qualifies them as sports.
Poker is not a 'sport', neither is chess.  For, neither have a 'physical' activity, that can be honed.

It is a good point, because comparing chess to poker is a GREAT comparison, because both games are 100% 'mental' ability only.
