It's only a sport if there is a realistic chance of losing an eye. Not sure if Bishops are pointy enough for that.
I like an observation one of the duck's accounts made several months ago: "if it was a sport there would be more than three people making a life of it".
Chess is qualified as a sport to the Olympic people who run it, but I. Think that to be a sport it needs to be athletic but chess is athletic for your brain so I guess its a sport but not a sport
Chess is not recognised as a sport in the UK and receives no public funding. It is worth reminding ourselves why the International Olympic Committee and over 100 countries recognise chess as a sport. Chess is very Competitive. The objective of a game of chess is to win.

I think you need to look up the word "exertion". Picking up a chess piece and moving it to another square hardly counts as physical exertion. lol It doesn't exactly make you breathe hard.

Mainly though, "the physical movement of the pieces" has no effect on 'the skill' of chess.

What about playing on chess.com? Does dragging and dropping pieces with a computer count as physical exertion? lol Assuming that you believe that bullet and bughouse chess are sports, since they're pretty fast paced and there is a slight bit of physical exertion ........ where do you draw the line? Daily chess certainly can't be a sport. I can sit on my butt (in the air conditioning), make one move, eat dinner, shower, sleep for 8 hours, go to work for 8 hours and then make my next move. How is that a sport? What about rapid chess? Is that a sport? Where do you draw the line?
