Grand Theft Auto is a video game. Board games are different.

I would argue that chess is a sport on the basis that there are major international chess tournaments, large amounts of prize-money, adjudicators, audiences and sponsors just like any other sport. I think of a normal board game as one where it is bought from the shops and played with friends for enjoyment, without major tournaments, without large crowds and without rewards for winning. For example, we don't have a ranking points system for monopoly or checkers.

None of the above has any bearing on the question whatsoever.

Patzership

Chess is mental Kung-Fu. So yes,it is a sport.

The mental pressure and exersion that a long game of chess can bring is equal to the amount of time you work out at a gym. It leaves you tired and sore and sometimes light headed because of all of the tension you do not realize you are feeling. In a sense yes. Chess is a sport.

vijaykidecha

dumb topic. you cant debate about the definitions of things.

You have NO IDEA just how wrong you are.

In my opinion sports need to have some kind of physical activity part, and sitting on a chair doesn't count as such. I really don't see why it should be seen as a sport, so I'll go with the game. Although I'd say something like "hobby, leisure" would be closer to how I see chess.

I don't think the organization around a certain activity defines its intrinsic characteristics. The gameplay of chess is such that in my opinion it doesn't qualify as a sport. In fact, I don't know if you have heard, but dota 2 (an online game) tournament price pools have reached more than 15 millions at the moment which is a lot more than any chess tournament yet people don't call it sports. It also has all the elements you mentionned, such as sponsors and audiences, but in much bigger proportions as it fills stadiums. People call it ESports, as in electronic sports but nobody would say it actually is a sport since it lacks the physical aspect. I think it is pretty much the same thing for chess.

Maybe we sould call it GSports, for game sports? Both clans would be satisfied, and it would be described pretty well. Checkers could apply too

Chess is a little like formula one racing. You sit on a seat and move your hands a bit.
