Is chess a sport or a game

Both because I think a game is when something is there to play with and have fun and a sport is something that is there for competitive purposes. But chess combines both so I know no appropriate or accurate answer

The question arises: when did sport come to be associated primarily with physical competition, i.e., athletics?

I'd say it's both, but the answer can be grounded in your personal experience and tailored to your specific goals. For example, I don't care to compete, so it's healthy for me to view chess as a game, rather than a sport. For someone with ambitious goals in competitive chess, I'm sure they would classify it as a sport, since it involves rigorous training sessions. When playing chess for simplicity, enjoyment, and with no particular motives to become the next best chess player in the world, I definitely believe that it's best to consider it a game, and to try to learn not to take losses personally - (this is something that I personally struggle with).

Aww, thank you, I'm no genius by any stretch of the imagination, but I wouldn't doubt that a lot of people here on chess.com are, including yourself!

Artificial distinction. All sports are games.

Semantics. Not all games are sports.

That's probably true.

I think of it like squares and rectangles. All squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares. All sports are probably games, but not all games are sports. Some games, like chess or Sorry do not rise to the level of sports. Just as some rectangles do not rise to the level of squares.

The additional requirements are not met.

I don’t recall eating an entire can of these since the 1990s.
