Is chess a sport or a game

Also there is certainly some physical exertion involved in playing chess. There is physical exertion involved in breathing, moving your arms, and literally everything else you do.

breathing, moving, digesting, blinking etc is not physical exertion (for most people), it is biochemical necessity. Not an element of sport.

So we are all agreed...

Horse racing is not a sport, it is work/job and a life's passion (as quoted by two employees of horse racing). Nobody can argue with that.

Chess is not a sport, it is a game (as quoted by world Champion Boris Spassky) - no physical exertion/skill (lots of mental exertion/skill).

Problem solved. Excellent.

Because it is their job it doesn't mean it isn't a sport...but you are just being a dill so I will leave you to it.  Not interested in your silliness.

Cheers Cool

its a sport for sure

I think your idea of calling motor sports not a sport but something close to competive hobby is innovative. But not exactly accurate:P

Even this line "All sports are games , but not all games are sports." doesnt sound true to me. I think weighlifters, sprinters, javelin throwers (I'm not bothered to carry on with that list) would be amused to hear they are playing a game.

I said that horse racing is difficult to define, so i asked two professionals and got back 'it is work' and "it is a life's passion". I love the way that Suggo is angry at me.... I have challenged him to a chess game. I hope he accepts.

We all agree with Boris Spassky about chess though ......

In the USSR Chess was officially recognized as sport. By the way,

Spassky was WC, but never has been Soviet chess Guru (for example as Botvinnik).

No anger, disinterest is a better descriptive, just couldn't be bothered arguing a point when you are just acting a goat about it.

This is very true. As I said, it does not really matter. We all enjoy it and study it - this is the main thing, I feel.

Chess is a game, everybody says 'good game' or 'i played badly in that game' etc.

So we all agree with Spassky. Marvellous.

You are mystery to me. At one point you claim that all that  matters is that we enjoy chess and then you come up with completely ridicilous arguements again.

I thought you said yourself that some games can be sports:P

An end to this business!

Avatar of wingtzun

Suggo, why would you resign a perfectly good game?

you obviously did not see that my last post on the forum said ok.. an end to this business.

Thankyou for blocking me to! Maybe you know I am right? who knows?

I am sorry if i caused you upset or hassle.

Chess isn't a sport  because it has no athletic demands. Sure, physical health and to be in shape is important, but a sport is a competition of athleticsm, while chess focuses duly on the mind. Not to say there isn't mind games in athletic sports, but that chess has a different focus than sports, its a game. This is my opinion, anyways.

It's also like this. A person who plays a receiver in football can transition into soccer/basketball and sort of have an ability to play it, though not necessarily well. But if you make that receiver play chess, he is most likely a total amateur. Vice versa works as well.

Good post Soulzityr, allthough I cannot quite agree with your assumption on transition between chess and baseball.

Baseball and Basketball are both ball games, so it may work out there and your reciever may indeed catch up quickly. But you cannot expect your reciever to do well at for example speed skating, or marathon running, or wrestling or... I think that those will be acceptable athletic sports according to your theory.

And what is your take on sports like motor sports (where often equipment quality or concentration may have a decisive role, not the athletic demands) and table-tennis, golf - do these areas really have any remarkable athletic demands?

I said that 'we all agree with Spassky' in order to try to close the argument.

Enjoy your chess!!!!!!!!!
