is Chess a sport or just a boardgame?

my opinion is that if your sat in your living room with a freind, kids etc is very much a board game, if your playing in tournament and competing then i would class it as a sport

it is a sport. you must practice regularly. it tires you out. chess is a big part of all lot of people's life.

Sounds a lot like accounting.

But it is a game played on a board.
Then again, to borrow from another purely abstract theoretical discussion without basis in reality among chessplayers...is a "girlfriend" the same as a "girl who is a friend"?

chess is more than sport its kinda universe, you cannot reach the end. if you fight just one time and feel that violence on the board. you cannot escape of it no longer . thats why l recommend to everyone to not play chess like me , just play it as a hobbie

Sounds more like prostitution

A girl who is a friend is potentially a "girlfriend". Just like a rematch in chess, is a potential error....or, art

I always thought it was a game and not a sport.
In the early 1990's, I entered my first tournaments (I still only have a provisional rating).
I played my best game against a 1400 player and won.
I was, at first, thrilled with adrenaline rushing through my veins, but was so exhausted driving home that I could barely see straight. The hours of the hardest concentration levels I have ever mustered made me more tired than when playing adult league ice hockey.
Since that day, I have always seen chess as a sport...and, like most sports, it has artistic components.
A bit off topic...I left off chess for almost a decade and am stunned to find that my play is well below what I guessed to be about 1400.
Has anyone else left chess and found a significant ratings drop?
