I did get into a spat with the father of a young IM because I played for a draw. Bruised chin over a game of chess. What the heck?

Is Rustam Kamsky back?

My hypothesis exactly bobbyDK. It was gym teachers that gave me the question. My conclusion was they would never be good enough sportsmen to be chessplayers or any other sport for that matter.

I got detention for that one and a clip round the ear to boot!

I found it in the board sports section at the Wal~Mart.  This constitutes proof.

I think and also have heard that chess is sport, art and science! It can be all of these, why wouldn't it be? Before the chess world championship on last year Anand lost lot of weight and generally lot of top players are well fit. If they are not it will affect on their results. There are not many fat men playing on top level.

No wonder chess isn't sport in US. Top american player Nakamura is bit fat :)

St Louis is famous for its rib joints and beer. Moving there may not have been a good idea.

I'm from St. Louis and I resemble that! The brain uses like 20% of the body's energy, which is a form of physical activity. Therefore chess is a sport. (;

Maybe he should play more chess then?!

Using 20 percent still leaves 80 percent unused. Playing chess is not going to solve overweight.

Bridge is also officially a sport

no sport will help with your owerweight. it is a matter how many calories you consume and burn.  true you need to eat less that day if you plan to sit for 4-5 hours and play chess than if you run 10 miles.

problem is many consume a lot of calories during chess me included (mars bar and more)

I think a good acid test might be that if success at a certain kind of competition raises your alpha male status, it is then a sport.  If success at it actually lowers your alpha male status, then it is a game.

I have no idea how this affects women players.

It sure is.

Chess has official boards that sanction and regulate corresponding international bodies across the world, it is a competitive game in which there is disparities for hosting events. It is an organized recreational activity, so it can fully justified to be a sport, it is a board game that has evolved into a modern day sport due to its popularity and approach by FIDE and ELO etc. For the icing on the cake, the International Olympic Comittee recognizes and has established Chess as a sport, albeit, a board game. Please feel free to view any of the institutions to view their classifications and organization of "chess". We can think of it as an mental sport, dissimilar in that manner to physical sports.

If I was looking for a chess set in a department store, I'd head towards the board games section before the sports section.

You play opponents averaging 500 points below you in blitz.

Needing help for your ego ??

Perhaps it's time to thicken up that skin a bit.

My-oh-my... touchy, aren't we? Quite amusing coming from a butthurt whiner who tries to change the subject when he loses an argument.

Methinks the gentleman doth protest too strongly.  It doesn't become you, or your binary thinking.  Sorry.

Great game record (beating up kids) in any case.

Just noticed that your average opponent in ONLINE chess is also 500 points below you.

Have you no shame, @Savage, always choosing weaker opponents ??

But you're right, Chess is NOT very sporting, for you.
