I think it is a waste of time for people without passion, cuz passion breeds foreward thinking and that is Chess - Prophylaxis and Strategy

Chess is a waste of time for me....It takes away from my painting or writing (I get lotsa satisfaction creating art)....but sometimes I don't feel 'creative'....so I play chess instead of watching tv.

I've never (especially being a non-pro) seen chess as a win-lose proposition. People let their ego take over (trying to boost it ?) and only play to win. I see winning as secondary and sharp, imaginative, creative play as primary.

But really, for nearly all players, chess leads nowhere....but, I will say, I've seen it help the mentally disturbed because it temporarily helps take their mind off their problems....so, it can be therapeutic....so that's a good thing....Smile....

It's the best waste of time I know.

ghostess...you have very nice looking legs!

You can play chess just for fun and not "waste time studying openings, etc."

I talked w/ a pretty good player (2000) a bit ago. He said he thought the game of chess was really hard. I said, "No, it's not at all - It's easy". He looked at me really strange. My point is the hard part is understanding how the pieces move and the rules. Now, if you want to just win and dominate your competition, then yes it's gonna be tough....really tough. And, you'll need to ask yourself....why just win ? Ego will center your answer....bzzzz....wrong. Think real long and real hard as to why you're playing....and then think again....and if you come up with the right answer ?....you will improve dramatically.

The waste of time is posting a long diatribe of acrimonious twaddle about your thoughts on my favorite game. Fact is chess will never make you a billionaire or even well healed, Pro or not! I love the challenge and enjoy the mind expansion chess offers. BTW I'm 70 years old and have played since 1954. I have watched all the modern Grand Masters with respect and awe. And I think computer software has ruined a great game. Now I play with my grandchildren... I have one grandaughter that is very good and loves to play but she'll never be a Pro. She's likely to win beauty pageants though!

So you can write in (almost) complete sentences?  Good for you.

What happened to the extra (.....s) you so love, @Parokeet ??

Try writing with gigantic font, just like the OP, then folks will surely notice your persuasive prose and felicitous turn of phrase.

lol and that coming from you -someone who cant even spell my username(I a double lol for that),..you should go to a refresher course at some preschool ....Also if you need gigantic fonts to see the page you should use a magnifying glass..i bet that they would teach that in  preschools too......i dont not see significant gramatical error in my posts ....(even if there is any know that I can speak and write fluently in four other languages which are really what i need to use in day to day life).........I tend to focus on content and you dont have the matter or genuine content... you just play the damn racist troll character(which is a rather disgusting role to play my child).......... i suggest you to use chess kid.com you idiot...I am sorry to be deviating from the topic............ its rather unfortunate that racist trolls provoke through racism and force people to deviate from intellectual discussion on the topic at hand.....

P.S. I Bet you can type well in say Sanskrit and Kannada.

Yes.  If Lebron was playing chess yesterday when he should have been getting ready for the Pacers, then he was wasting his time.

The_Ghostess_Lola

That's a wonderful point....Are you having fun ?...Are you being entertained ?....If yes, then that's great !....If not, then why play ?....only to defeat your opponent ?....If so, then you're playing for the wrong reason....trying to fill your ego with wins will prove to be futile....but the silver lining is it may lead you to examine your flaw in character....Smile....

Iknowthemoves

Chess isn't about winning or losing it's about analysis..

To everything under heaven, there is a time, a season and a set purpose. A time to live, a time to die and yes, my friends, a time for chess. Sometime soon (around April 15 in the U.S. I think) is the time you must pay your taxes.

To show you're upset (in these forums) is a public embarassment for all to see.  Please make a note of that, @Parokeet.  You'll be a better man for it, despite your abiding interest in Guantanamo.

@The_Ghostess_Lola sets the right tone.  Thank you, Madam.

No, farting in public is public embarrassment for all to see and hear.

It's not a waste, it just means that you probably won't have a career in it, but chess is a greate hobby no matter what.

Last year I got interested in chess.  I re-learnt the rules, learnt some tips, started playing online. I read the history of the game, biography of world chess champions.

I have finally come to a conclusion that Chess is a total waste of time for people who don't take it as a career/profession. For people(players, coaches, Arbiter etc) who choose the game as a career, spending time on openings, Gambits, endgame does not seem to be a waste of time. For them chess joins the category of all professions from Wall Street to Hollywood .  But for others, I don't think chess is a useful hobby/pass time.

What people generally say in favour of Chess.

1. Chess is an intellectual game:- In Chess, Analytical thinking,Problem solving, Memory, concentration, Foresight, Tactics, Strategy are involved. Chess is like an exercise to the mind/brain. It can improve our I.Q.

My Statement:- Although it is an intellectual game and has a glorious history, the question of whether it makes a person smarter in general or smarter at just chess is still debatable.

My conclusion is that Ches makes a person smarter at chess and probably smarter in general for kids. When one becomes an adult and got mind maturity, playing chess does not seem to have effect on his/her I.Q.
Now I understood, in Chess what matters most is the memory power of a person than any other intellectual traits. In short, if you want to be a top rated chess player, you should be a human database of chess games. As Kasparov said" A grandmaster needs to retain thousands of games in his head, for games are to him what the words of their mother tongue are to ordinary people, or notes or scores to musicians.."

(ii) Chess teaches life skills:- From chess, one can learn how to think/plan ahead, strategic thinking, foreseeing the problems and getting adjusted to future consequences, long term thinking, sacrificing short term benefits to achieve long term goals, time management, etc.

My Statement:- The statement of "Life imitates chess" or vice versa is simply absurd.  Life has many twists and turns. Games like football, hockey etc teaches like skills much more than chess. In football one has a clear cut goal(Goal scoring), how to pass on the ball from one team mate to another(Planning/Strategy), Tactical/short-term gains(corner, free kicks), which opponent player will get the ball next(foreseeing), Time management, working as a team(Team spirit), etc.
I found some links with regard to my opinion.

main.uschess.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=17341://
http://www.chess.com/forum/view/general/is-chess-a-waste-of-time-a-call-to-action2

BOTTOM LINE:- Everyone has the right to choose his/her career/profession. For people(Chess players, coaches, Arbiters, etc), chess is a career and they make money and a living out of it. Spending time and energy on chess give them monitory benefit.
But for others ,memorising openings and chess theories does not seem to yield any results except to make better at chess.
So, it is better to spend time on a games such as Badminton, Table tennis, foot ball etc  where you have both physical and mental involvement, where you get both the thrill of winning/losing and also physical exercise.

Yes it is a total waste of time and there is no excuse for it. It should be outlawed. Minimum 20 year prison sentence. It really grates on my nerves
