Is Chess a waste of time for non-pros?

I completely agree with you. Of course there are some things that chess do for you, make you a little bit smarter, and lots of other stuff. Video games don't do anything productive unless you are really good or entertaining and risk it to become a youtuber. But chess is fun, it is a beautiful game, and it is really fun to talk about with other people. I wouldn't say it is completely useless, it is more productive than videogames.

I've been to a middle school Christmas orchestra event (before coronavirus) and the kids spent a lot of time practicing for it.

It wasn't very good.

Is playing a music instrument a waste of time for people if the vast majority of them aren't going to make money playing an instrument?

If you think enjoyable things are a waste of time, then you are a waste of a life.

Depends what u mean by waste of time.

If u enjoy it as a hobby, then no its clearly not a waste of time.

If ur trying to make money from it, yes ur 100% wasting time.

You should give a little thought to your question before posting an enormous screed. Whatever you do in life whether it is playing chess, watching TV, going to the seaside, eating a lollipop, feeding the ducks,  and so on, is just wasting your time 'til you die. So, try to do something you enjoy.

I have finally come to a conclusion that Chess is a total waste of time for people who don't take it as a career/profession. For people(players, coaches, Arbiter etc) who choose the game as a career, spending time on openings, Gambits, endgame does not seem to be a waste of time. For them chess joins the category of all professions from Wall Street to Hollywood .  But for others, I don't think chess is a useful hobby/pass time.

What people generally say in favour of Chess.

1. Chess is an intellectual game:- In Chess, Analytical thinking,Problem solving, Memory, concentration, Foresight, Tactics, Strategy are involved. Chess is like an exercise to the mind/brain. It can improve our I.Q.

My Statement:- Although the theory is intellectual  and the game has a glorious history, the question of whether it makes a person smarter in general or smarter at just chess is still debatable. Remember, there are people who don't play chess or even hate it, yet they make their mark in the world.

My conclusion is that Ches makes a person smarter at chess and probably smarter in general for kids(at the brain development stage). When one becomes an adult and got mind maturity, playing chess does not seem to have effect on his/her I.Q.
Now I understood, in Chess what matters most is the memory power of a person than any other intellectual traits. In short, if you want to be a top rated chess player, you should be a human database of chess games. As Kasparov said" A grandmaster needs to retain thousands of games in his head, for games are to him what the words of their mother tongue are to ordinary people, or notes or scores to musicians.."

(ii) Chess teaches life skills:- From chess, one can learn how to think/plan ahead, strategic thinking, foreseeing the problems and getting adjusted to future consequences, long term thinking, sacrificing short term benefits to achieve long term goals, time management, etc.

My Statement:- The analogue of "Life imitates chess" or vice versa is simply absurd.  Life has many twists and turns. Games like football, hockey etc teaches like skills much more than chess. In football one has a clear cut goal(Goal scoring), how to pass on the ball from one team mate to another(Planning/Strategy), Tactical/short-term gains(corner, free kicks), which opponent player will get the ball next(foreseeing), Time management, working as a team(Team spirit), etc.

I think it is a propaganda by chess coaches, who say that they not only teaches children chess skills but also life skills.

I found some links with regard to my opinion.

main.uschess.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=17341://

BOTTOM LINE:- Everyone has the right to choose his/her career/profession. For people(Chess players, coaches, Arbiters, etc), chess is a career and they make money and a living out of it. Spending time and energy on chess give them monitory benefit.
But for others ,memorising openings and chess theories does not seem to yield any results except to make better at chess.
So, it is better to spend time on games such as Badminton, Table tennis, foot ball etc  where you have both physical and mental involvement, where you get both the thrill of winning/losing and also physical exercise.

Comments and criticisms are welcome.

If something is fun and doesn't immediately make your crazy, isn't immoral, doesn't harm others, and is legal, then there is no refutation.

Non you should take it like a strategic mental game and no more. Be happy chess is just a game.

didn't realize that, but thanks. Still thinks it's a waste of time but not an actual waste of time just time to waste when you don't have a squat to do, get me.

ShavendraDeRafayal

Chess surely is a boring game but when u came to learn it it's really interesting! It just takes some time. 2 years ago I was playing chess with my father (@RoshanDeRafayal) I was always losing and I thought of playing another sport But that is the only mental game he could play because he did not have timemeh.png. so I kept on playing and I met chess.com and I learnt a lot, from then on I am taking my father down. win streak of 53wink.png. And now I love it so so much even though I lose to others.

You can claim almost anything is a waste of time depending on your life priorities and other definments. "One man's trash is another man's treasure."

I have found that one of the biggest time wasters is casino gambling. I can understand throwing away money, people do that quite often. But to slowly, almost tortuously throw it away seems like a much bigger waste. It's like standing on top of a tall building and tossing 10 dollar bills off the side. It's entertaining, because you get to watch it disappear. But the result is the same, you know someone will get it, just not you.

So like you said, almost anything is a waste of time depending on priorities. If someone enjoys playing recreational chess, like I do, then it's not a waste of time. Time spent with friends and family is NEVER a waste of time.

I don't know how you can say that football is more tactical or strategical than chess with a straight face.

My humble opinion - I think chess is very much like real life where you make many short-term plans to achieve an end goal. And also like real life since it is not obvious what the short-term goal should achieve. And also like real life where despite your best efforts, you may sometimes not get what you wanted. You should read the book "The Art of Learning" by IM Josh Waitskin where he goes from being a chess master to a tai chi champion and he talks about how he used chess to become good at tai chi.

Moreover, I think that before you can make such a conclusive statement about chess, you need to understand its nuances; right now, your rating is only around 1200. Come back to this forum when you are at least 2000 in any format and we can have a better discussion.

Enjoyment is the key word here.

You can play chess just for fun and enjoy it, or maybe fun is more so progressing in the game and studying openings, tactics, strategy etc.

Everyone’s reasons for playing chess is different and at the end of the day it comes down to how they enjoy it.

No different than spending time playing table tennis per your example, some enjoy playing table tennis just for the fun and don’t really care about improvement, while some others play table tennis very competitively and winning is what satisfies their enjoyment.
