no choice...it's an addiction
Is chess a waste of time?

Shouldn't chess.com nominate someone to be a resident mufti or an imam to answer such questions? I vote for Danny Rensch.
I vote for kaynight.

Sorry, embarrasing question here: How many accounts do you have?

Does a guitar not have six strings?
Maybe he's from the Ozarks where guitars are actually Banjos...

Considering that it's a game that's been around for centuries, and that it's based on logic, critical and strategic thinking, attention to detail and controlling your ego, if watching the Kardashians is a waste of time then no chess definitely isn't, especially since it builds skills that can be used in day to day life, unlike the latter example of a complete waste of time which dulls thought and inflates egos.

Magnus Carlsen is the best in the world at "moving wood". Has plenty of money and gets to have fun as a job.

As long as you don't neglect the other important things in your life, then I guess i'ts not a waste of time...

Does a guitar not have six strings?
Unless it's a 12-string?
As for Magnus having wasted his life pushing wood pieces around...well, he's also a model!

Chess has made Magnus a wealthy man. Not a waste of time. You, TC, on the other hand, have wasted your time making inane threads like this.
I think that OP is pointing on computers and chess engines which will at some point eventually kill this beautyful game.
Exactly, you are the only person with a logical mind on this thread so far.

Chess is a friend with benefits. It gives us a fun way to pass the time of day. For older folks it staves off senility for children it improves their ability in school. For us all it creates beautiful works of art which is what the games and positions are. The computers help us by analyzing our games and pointing out our mistakes but we do not have to let them spoil the game for us. Chess is not merely pushing wood, it gives us fun and pleasure.

Chess can be a waste of time if you believe every hobby or activity must have some long term benefit.
I think all chess players should only play chess for their own enjoyment and consider enjoyment as its own reward.
If someone tries to convince themselves that chess should be played for some kind of development of the their mind, to win a trophy, or to somehow benefit them in other ways they'll be disappointed and for them it will have been a waste of time.
So, as they say, life is wasted on living..... :D
