Statistically, yes. It can not be denied that players now play higher level chess. However, as you said there are a lot more tools nowadays to help plan and improve your game. But everyone has access to those tools. So while the competition plays better, so do you. For example, if Fischer had all the tools we currently have, he probably would be better then he was when he was world champion. TL;DR Currently players play better but it's not harder because everyone has access to the tools.

I'm just wondering if chess competition is harder than before like top notch competitions. Are GMs more difficult to beat than say 30 or 40 years ago? With all the info and chess software nowadays it could be. Is it being a world champion more difficult now than when Fischer did it? What do you say?
