Is chess dead?

Yeah, sure. Chess is COMPLETELY dead. No wonder the chess.com forums get new comments almost every minute of every day.

Disco is Dead.

Chess is not.

That which was never alive cannot be dead.  All dryness aside, it is not very popular in the US because most kids don't have much appreciation for intellectually and skill based games like chess and prefer video games that are less mentally strenuous, (but don't have the replay value that chess has) such as Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, sports games, etc...  just saying that kids are stupid nowadays doesn't answer the question in any meaningful way.  It irritates me that I live in a city of 35,000 and when I attempted to start a chess club via Craigslist I got a grand total of 2 responses!

i am not sure it is fair to say video games are less mentally strenuous.  of course, maybe i should be more mentally strained in chess, but i find i probably think about equally in some of the video games.

Well, chess is alive and well in Central Florida. Polk Scholastic Chess alone boasts almost 700 studnts every monthly (Oct, Nov, Dec, Jan) tourny.

Chess is certainly dying in the UK yes.

Why would you say that?  There are many, many chess clubs in England.  Have you attended chess tournaments? Where is the, "UK", anyway?  Is that Scotland, Ireland, England...what?  I reside in the U.S.A., but I don't say I'm from, "North America".

In short the UK is a nation consisting of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Saying you are from the UK is exactly like saying you are from the USA. Saying you are from England/Scotland/etc... would (very roughly) be like saying you are from Texas. Note that the (Republic of) Ireland is a separate country and has nothing to do with the UK.

As for the topic, I agree that chess in the UK isn't in a particularly healthy state, and it's no better on the island of Ireland.

Of course chess lives. Will we ever see the excitement that Fischer's championship gave U.S. Chess? I guess we'll just have to wait for another U.S. born World Champion to see. Let's hope he is a little more emotionally stable than Fischer was.

I wonder how many kids grow up emotionally stable that were abandoned by both parents ?  I would think very few, if any.

Great one!  But I'll suggest you morph Korchnoi's face into the picture with the caption reading, "I play dead people."

That's because North America is a continent.

So?  What is the, "U.K."?  Why is there an effort to bury the identities and  names of Scotland, Ireland and England?

Fischer's emotinal stability was fine until his own government came along and destroyed it.

It was his home life before that. He was very unstable his whole life and that was simply the final straw before he went completely off the deep end.

Why is there an effort to bury the identities and names of Texas, California and Minnesota?

Minnesota is the only one I don't understand.

No one ever professionally evaluated Bobby Fischer as to his stability or not.  Suffice to say that to be followed 24 hours a day by the FBI everywhere you go, for many, many years, ever since you were a very young child is not a normal way for anyone to have to live, especially a child. I say again, Fischer's own government destroyed him.
