is chess for a hang out or for serious players only

Yeah, if anything, even if they didn't come to the site to play chess per say, it would become a mounting temptation, always just a few clicks away.
Whatever it takes, I'm happy to see more people playing chess. I honestly think that if they come and camp and hang out even just under the auspice of being social, that we'll get them sooner or later.
The chess energy is infectious, and we're welcoming. They'll play a game sooner or later.

Just the thought of users like this out there has turned my experiences at chess.com from positive to negative. I'm going to send Erik an email about this... and if nothing is done by the time I finish my games I will be canceling my subscription to this site and giving up chess forever.
(still really bored right now)
gee..., we're going to miss you
ps don't suppose you could convince farm tractor and bow-dude to go with you ?

"chess.com is for everyone. and who knows we may get someone interested in chess rather than guns and knives on the street". from PerfectGent. Amen to that idea mate!

I'd love to know what you get up to on Yahoo.com, then

They will feel left out at some point and want to start playing. The more the merrier.
Did God ever got back to Jesus?
Oh! Right. I'm crap at relaying messages. Yeah. I met him down at the pool hall last night(I won fifty bucks-- that guy can't shoot). Anyway, his dad told him that people still can talk with their mouths, but since the phone companies are screwing people on long distance, websites are a viable alternative. Jesus said God went off on some tangent about global economics and he stopped listening. Somebody could practically write a book on that guy's rants. It's always something. I remember this one time when J.C. and I were already late for a movie and his dad just wouldn't shut up about M. Night Shyamalan. 'He's the best director out there!' I told him that I like Wes Anderson and the Coen brothers. He threatened to turn me into a pillar of salt.

silentfilmstar13 I have reached the momentus conclusion that you are a grade A nutcase.
and long may you continue sir
really chuckled at your last couple of posts here
Is there any extra credit I can do to become a grade A+ nutcase? I'm willing to put in the effort.
It really boils down to whether they're interested at all in playing chess using the site's features. If they play a game of chess here and there, however rarely, then it'll have been worth it. I'm a bit confused as to why they chose Chess.com over any IM program or whathaveyou to get in touch with you, but hopefully they come to enjoy it. Seeing that they want to stick with the group, it seems logical to me that since the group is playing chess, eventually they might too. I'd give it some time.
And for people telling these people to take a hike, with 200,000+ users, most of whom aren't active on the forums, or talking about chess, and who knows how many inactive players, there are probably already a few thousand like them who've been here without any problem. I'm not sure they'll get much out of it, but it won't wreck anyone's experience if they stick around.
Also, if you use this site for nothing but chatting, you take unnecessarily up bandwidth; I think we could do without a couple thousand bandwidth leeches, and, as mentioned before, kindly direct them to myspace, or a sharp stick, or both...
=)
