Well, they do.

My son recently bragged to his friend that his dad is 5'7" and has big muscles.

One of those claims is true, the other is not.

Clearly, i'm not a nerd to my son... but his friend's dad might opine differently!

I don't think I was considered a nerd in high school.. i played in a band, i played sports... but I'm definitely making up for lost time now!!!

Im not even sure what a nerd is...are you a nerd for not doing what everyone else tells you to? Do you have to be physically strong to not be a nerd, what if you are both physically strong and mentally strong? Does being able to do math and physics make you a nerd, but failing makes you cool? I dont get it, really

If someone calls you a nerd then just say "I'd rather be a nerd than a retard."

I find it rather interesting that activities like chess are often seen as unpopular in school environments.  While activities like taking drugs and being street rats are seen as some how superior and exist within the realm of the 'popular'.

 I concur.

Nerds usually are the ones who go to college get a PhD or doctorate ,and ,or, just starts making the triple digits.   While on the other hand we have the high school jocks who think they have it all.......  Until they are 45, overweight, and working for much less.   Who cares what people say, or think.Tongue out

Yes.

enjoying a mental challenge doesn't make you a nerd, it makes you awesome!!

I like what Loomis said, you are not what others say (this is the one exception)

Not at all, chess is for athletic people. I go to the gym just to keep in shape for the chess, and I play Badminton and tennis.

Absoulutely, Who said you have to be out of shape to play chess?

Perhaps you should realize that that's a word oft repeated by intolerant little pin heads that aren't intelligent enough to come up with any original ideas, so they just squawk out some stupid little stereotype, because it's easy. Perhaps you need new friends.

IMO, chess, for most folks, is a bit of enjoyable mental recreation, to be enjoyed by anyone who is willing to get involved in aggressive, non-physical (strictly speaking) competition.

Certain people may think of chess as a "nerdish" pastime, since it involves a measure of planning and analyzing, and is a symbolic representation of war. But I think chess becomes a nerdish activity only when it is played at the higher levels by masters who devote little time to anything else.

Even if that's the case, it's their life, and their business, so what's wrong with it? What great things do all the name callers devote their time to? Other than criticizing other people for the way they spend their time.
