Is chess harmful for mental health.

Yep this game can send you around the twister. I am living proof

At least you would survive the twister. Not us mere mortals. happy

Chess would seem to bring out the entire range of emotions. How you handle it, as you handle other things in your life, can be good or bad. If anything, it's making us all Bi-Polar. (Or is it Bi-Polgar?) We go from the Heights of Ecstasy to the Trough of Despair.

No.

But an obsession with anything can be detrimental.

Also detrimental would be the failure to take an interest in something that motivated you to learn. Smart children who do not continue learning become stoopid adults. Chess motivates learning.

For those, however, who develop no interests outside of chess, the learning process is truncated. That was part of Fischer’s problem

@pcwildman

"The thrill of victory , . . the agony of defeat."

is a sports cliche.

This is the problem with sports in general.

I can't believe we may have the same problem as "jocks".

Think of the advancements Carl the Draper could have made in Meteorology. "I'm going to ride the tornado again, I'll be back."

There's nothing wrong with having a little drop of Bi-Polgar in this day & age, It will help you fit in & you wont feel like an oddball. Every sane person needs to start bashing their head against the wall cause otherwise the world could become a very lonely place soon.

You don't need to be crazy to play chess, but it helps.

Carl the Draper is filling potholes in LA. Think he ever played Chess?

I don't think chess is objectively harmful for your mental health, but with absolute 100% certainty it can exacerbate and trigger existing problems. I see it as an exercise that requires intelligence, forward planning, lateral thinking and an ability to empathise with your opponent. When you're confronted with your own failures, it could be seen as evidence of a lack of these key abilities. When I lose in chess (or even when I win, but play poorly) I don't get angry at the other player, I get really angry at myself and my stupidity. On top of that, having your ability publicly numerically tracked can also feel bad – almost like how some people with eating disorders obsess over kilograms or calories.
My personal advice would be: don't play chess if you're feeling anxious or depressed. Do something else. Play chess if and when you're feeling more stable.

Amazing how an obvious troll thread gets resurrected again and again.

Well not for me but it did get bobby fisher insane

Maybe but did you know that someone played chess when he was asleep?!
Avatar of RichColorado

It seem that the older I get the worst blunders I make . . .

I took a bishop with my bishop and he took my bishop with his queen. . .

I knew I would swap queens. . . . But I started looking for a better move. . .

I moved a rook and left my queen to be taken . . . STUPID! . . . I resigned. . .

I am going tp ne 86 Dec 14 . . . So I am probably going to drop the chess games . . .

I feel the mental problem creeping into me . . . But I will keep bowling ten pins. . . .

Read the forums here. There’s not a lot of sanity. Most of the posters play chess.
