Why do, so many of us attach chess to our self worth? No other game has cursed me in this way..

Yes, chess is a part of my personal identity.

No, I do not attach my self worth to chess.

There are many things I consider parts of my personal identity. Chess is just one of many. If chess is "cursing [you] in this way" then I'm guessing it is partly because of how much time and effort you've invested into your chess. Wonderful! Attaching identity to someone you invest a lot into a love if a good thing, but I wouldn't call it a "curse" and it also isn't healthy to attach your self worth to a board game.

How long have you been playing chess if you don't mind me asking? People don't typically attach their entire self worth to something they started 2 weeks ago, so I imagine you've played chess for a long time before creating this chess.com account.

I love your status. I’m sure you will single handedly stop all cheating going forward.

Man your support means the world to me. I'm sure with the combined power of Ariana Grande we can eliminate all cheaters, even better then that GM thats always talking about running the procedure....

I played casualy about 20 yrs ago. Meaning like 4 games a month against a good friend these were 5 hr long games. I did learn when I was 5 and jumped up to around 1300 by 7 then completely quit till I was in my thirties, so combined I have played about 2 yrs of casual chess cumulatively. The 5 to 7 was games on the weekends against adults. I love chess I just happen to be very poor at it.

Hey I remember you. You were the person on that other forum who said that since some sad, pathetic individuals have decided to cheat in order to gain elo, we should all cheat. After all, it's for the sake of 'improvement'.

PrimaMaria

Not sure about personal identity XD but I do like chess.

I have never advocated for cheating on any forum. I have complained about possible cheating in chess and have a real hate for cheating in general. I have never cheated. I lose or win fairly. Why cheat? Theres no joy, because it isn't your victory..

I do wonder why chess brings such a feeling of hey if I can't get to Magnus level I must be deficient. Other sports or games don't seem to cause this more personal effect at least for me. I really feel that if I can't make 1400 in a month that I should just give it up entirely and yes I'm aware of the toxic trait here, which is why I posed the question.

That's cool; you'll improve if you stick with it and especially if you love chess, sticking with it is much easier to do happy.png
