Personally, I think it's more important to stand up to political correctness and extreme word play sensitivity than to respect it or abide by it.  I don't have to do anything, regardless of what the nitwits think is off color.  Also I think that adults have already learned how to speak and write, and interpret things and actions.  I have no need to have an other adult correct me and tell me how to do those things or think about those things, especially on politically motivated grounds, or even "progressive" grounds.  It's jackboot strides in reverse (or red-shirt strides forward maybe) to keep making concessions.  It's also cultural destruction.  Discussion is one thing.  Left-Wing arm twisting is another.  "Resistance is not futile".  So resist!

I agree. This political correct stupidity just proves society has NO commen sense.

It's a legitimate question. I'm not sure what to believe but here is one answer I found:

In medieval times black was thought to be a lucky colour. The white player was allowed to go first since the black player already had the advantage of the lucky colour.

Is this true?

I think it would be reverse racism if black always went first.  On the other hand, it would be confusing to me if you had to switch off between black and white going first.  Whether the inventors of chess were racist, well I don't really know.  Maybe, maybe not.

Based on the articles cited, it would appear that the convention of white moving first is a recent (last 100 years) thing.

Do your friends play chess? If so, maybe they dont do very well at it, being that they'd be too busy pondering over racism instead of playing the game.

Everyone, regardless of race, would have something to say about this subject, which I cant understand why it is an issue in the first place. If black were to go first, you'd still have the same question. It really is a rethorical question which appears to have come from someone who is worried, perhaps too much, about racism. And since that seems to be the real subject, all races are prejudiced in one form or another.

If you look back in chess history, you'll see that around the time of Philidor, white and red sets were more common than white and black ones. Was that an anti-Native American statement? Don't think so. The idea that there's inequality in not taking turns going first--well, we DO take turns. As individuals, that is. One color is associated with the first move, because that's the way to eliminate confusion. But since we take turns BEING that color, how could that be racist?

NO! Chess is not racist! Black moves 1st in checkers. White moves 1st in chess. Doesn't that seem fair? Since many comments are on a WHITE  background I tried to be fair so I used DARKER background. I hope this will show the silliness of the racist question. The answer is here in black and white!

If the games are recorded for later analysis, wouldn't always having a particular color start first make said later analysis easier?

No this is not true necessarily.  It's too much of a generalization.  Someone who steals your bicycle say, doesn't know you to hate you.  Also the whole concept of "hate crime" is wrong and ridicules.  It's a form of mind control and it implicates the accused on the basis of political views.  It's a rotten to the core law and it's an over-extension of state control over the individual.  It's an cultural aberration.  In fact we have had laws heretofore which covered certain crimes.  Not on how you thought or who you disliked, but on what you actually did.  That's exactly all that should matter.  Making something a thought crime to make it a worse crime is totally absurd.  Also I think this could be extended as a concept to deny individual liberty and thought.  In fact it is I believe in Europe.  You speak something perceived as off color in Europe or England in many places and they stick you with a hate speech violation.   I know this is rooted in the experience with the Nazis and WWII.  There's more of an obsession there about it than here. (Of course there's more of an obession about race here, and there are good reasons for that.)  Nonetheless, it's still kind of Orwellian to me.  Someday this will be corrected for the gross folly that it is.  Someday our lesser version of it, will be corrected too.  At least we have a Bill of Rights here which is hard to get around for the "progressives".  It's the same exact kind of person in power or otherwise, promoting these laws who also promotes anti-smoking laws, anti-gun laws, pro- gay rights laws, all of this.  Basically to protect what they feel is important and trash anything else on the basis of progress, especially other people's rights, especially other peoples national and cultural identity, it if interferes with the Utopia they see for themselves.  In any case that is the context I see this in.

This is all beyond the scope of the original idea, yes.  But some one started talking about crimes and how people thought, so this is all connected.  Other bags of worms I guess.

nice post

(Of course there's more of an obession about race here, and there are good reasons for that.)

What are the good reasons for an obscession with race in this country?

bugoobiga

all crimes stem from some form of hate - that's what i said, and meant.

If you steal,

you hate that someone has something that you don't.

you hate having to earn something honestly.

you hate conforming to a law abiding society.

like that...not about hating because of looks.

no, i think black started it when he started selling off his own peices - can't have a buyer without a seller.

I'm not sure what you've stumbled onto here!  If you think about it, hate also explains every type of behavior.  Don't believe me?  Name any behavior and I'll explain it for you.

When I flush the toilet: I hate my poop, I hate the silence, I hate the smell --
When I eat doritos: I hate the chip, I hate being hungry, I hate triangle shaped food --
When I take time to comment on this stuff: I hate using my time productively, I hate talking to rational people, I hate reading posts the make sense.

etc.
