Is chess really a sport?

That is the question that is still being debated on. No one knows for sure whether chess is a sport or not. But, some people do believe it is a sport.

Why it is a sport: it requires tactics and skills

Why it isn't a sport: doesn't requires any type of physical body movement

What do you think? Is chess a sport?

It requires physical body movement.  I don't think I can move my pieces with my eyes happy.png

It requires hours of training, hard work, and preparation.  Yes, it is a sport.

If fishing is a sport then chess should be a sport.

No.  It’s just a game, an overrated game.

Have fun with it and enjoy yourself, and don’t take it seriously like the incels do.

Once you clearly define what a sport is, you'll have your answer.

Where, and by whom?

I seriously haven't heard it debated once in my entire life outside of hobbyists, enthusiasts, etc.

Chess does not require physical body movement.  Even people like Stephen Hawking have been able to play chess. With literally no physical movement, at all.

It does not require hours of training, it does not require hard work and it does not require preparation. All those things may be employed, but they certainly are not required. So it's definitely not a sport.

Alright, you have a couple of good points there. happy.png

Yes, you can play chess with no training, no hard work, and no preparation.  You probably won't beat many people, but you can still play chess.  But in the same way, what if I pick up a bat and a ball, and try to play baseball?  I strike out every time and I can't catch the ball, but I sure am still playing baseball.  With no preparation.  You can play any sport and not be good, but it doesn't really disprove that chess is a sport.

I like the question above, what really is a sport?  That has to be defined first.

If you play baseball and strike out every time I think that's called a no hitter, or at least part of a no hitter. It's still baseball because you are doing everything that baseball requires.

How good someone is, or is not, makes no difference if something is a sport or not. A sport isn't determined by the score, or how good you are.  It's determined by what you do to try to get the score.

In sports, that means physical effort or skill. In games like chess, that's mental effort or skill. Chess is the complete opposite of what a sport is.

Avatar of jasonshen11

Yes and no. It's a mental sport, but no one thinks of it as a sport.

Gormally vs aronian was definitely sport.

Why is poker on ESPN?

@lfPatriotGames OK.  So the distinction between what a sport is and is not is physical effort vs mental effort.  I can go with that I think. happy.png

The International Olympic Committee has accepted chess as a sport. So it is a sport.

The Olympiad is not the Olympics.
