It's just the nature of the beast--no site is really "safe." However, there are precautions you can take, as some mentioned before: don't give out personal information, personal pictures, etc. The nature of chess hopefully brings a more courteous crowd. I have two sons who like chess, but I still need to help them be aware.
Is chess.com safe for teens?

As a paying member I have put my money so to speak where my mouth is and am not disapointed with Chess.com. I have brought concerns to the support staff and they have been addressed very quickly. If you are a parent the responsibilty is yours, I would recommend you support this site then if you consider it a positive influence for your child as there are very few of those on the internet. Always monitor your child, regardless of any site though is my motto. This is a great website made so by the people that frequent it and the site support staff, I would highly suggest that if you agree that you consider paying for the use thereof, the cost-benefits are well worth it, at any level of membership. Thank you Chess.com for this great CHESS website!
I would imagine that erik and the rest of the support staff are intelligent enough to stop all the teen script kiddies from doing any real harm, unless you're talking about something along the lines of a coordinated DDoS attack.
