Is ‘En Passent’ a bug, feature or an illegal chess move?

Jokes aside, I believe the origins of the move was that before pawns could move 2 squares on their first turn, you could only move one square up (ik I’m captain obvious rn), which meant that if, say, you were white and one of your pawns was on the 5th rank (for this example we’ll go with e5), then both the d6 and f6 pawns can’t be played without risk of capture. When they made pawns able to move 2 squares up, they added that just to respect the old pawn rules.
