Is it a disaster if Anand wins the candidates tournament?

A disaster for chess marketing in some sense because we know Anand is gonna lose to Carlsen.

I think it is. He's washed up and although he's doing excellently at this tournament, he doesn't stand a chance vs Carlsen, yet AGAIN.

Aronian will still win this tournament in my opinion.

Well, everybody had their chance, right now he´s the biggest candidate but let us see how this finishes.

When someone Plays a former Looser! they don't play at their Best!

Hence how Anand has got as far as he has! Soon to be Wiped out! :)

I don't agree. There have been some excellent matches in the candidates tournament up to now, and many of them have been played in an attacking style.

Yes.

Some  have  thought  not  good  for  chess

I  say  ..more  power  to  the  good  Anand!!

He  recovers  from  loss  and  may  have  improved  game  (  despite..advanced  ..age)  and  more  particularly  may  have  improved  strategy  against  new  world  champ..

beardown12

If  other  contenders  are  so  strong...why  is  Anand  leading  ???

The purpose of the candidates is to pick the best competitor. So far its looking like Anand. All you can know for sure is that iof he wins he would likely do better against Carlsen than anyone else.

The probnlem is that Carlsen is just a doiminant force right now, no matter who wins.

Anand will probably give a better fight this time. He improved.

He has to ? there is Only one place less than the Bottom! ?

Last year everyone said Anand would do well as he had greater match play experience and better opening prep.

He's now a year older, Magnus won reasonably easily last year, and Magnus is still improving.  With the best will in the world, facing him again when you are forty odd must be a daunting prospect.  Hats off to Anand though, he deserves to win this tournament on the evidence so far.

But it's not a disaster.  A plane crash or a war is a disaster. It's just a bit of a drag. Smile

MrDamonSmith

I'm wondering if a few players aren't trying as hard as they could because they secretly feel sorry for Vishy & think he deserves another chance at Magnus.

Shivsky

Not a disaster but a sad reminder that nobody else brought something more to the table to earn the right to challenge Carlsen.

The Point you are Missing!...is there is a BIG! Difference between a 40 Year old Genius and a Normal Chess player! just have a look at how Good Carlsen will play when he is 40 Laughing

MrDamonSmith

I predict Carlsen will peak in his mid 20's. There is nobody to push him to get stronger. It was the same with Fischer. Kasparov had Karpov to push him & of course Karpov had Korchnoi, etc. There's no player or players close enough to keep pushing Carlsen to train & study harder. There's no reason for him to keep trying to prove he's better than the others. Been there, done that already.

WRONG! I am in the Genius League! and ...it never happend untill I found a Safe place to Sleep & eat ?

Some of us just don't have the same  Easy Start as others! so I Predict Carlsen will be at his best between 30 - 40 and then he could go onto 40+ with improvment depending on what happens to him!

Before the candidates I did not want to see a rematch, but only because Anand seemed washed up. But he is basically running away with the candidates tournament. Carlsen didn't run away with the candidates tournament last year. Anand may lose to Carlsen again, but at least now the possibility that the WC match will be interesting exists, and that's all I really want.

ilgambittoo

Why should the question mark not be on Carlsen? If he is an human or a bot ?
