Is it cheating to ask for general advice while in a game?

Talking about lack of integrity, who's the guy with the red hat on ? Smile

thegreat_patzer

thats a great zing.

Trump would not ask if it were allowed.  He would ask his smartest friend the answer then pretend it was HIS move. if pressed he would then claim it was all his idea.

this is Exactly like his business strategy - look it up- he's used person after person to profit, and bankruptancy...

but. shucks. I digress.  obviously you cannot ask anyone what to move.  but think about it folks. if you couldn't ask ANY GENERAL advice, How busy would the forums BE- I mean many people HERE are playing online games.

and they ask " whats the best opening", "are bishops stronger than knights", " how do I improve in chess"

they get buckets of General advice.

so you eggs I think are all off.  you can seek GENERAL advice -that is what chess improvement is all about - but you cannot ask for SPECIFIC advice.

oh and like it or not your allowed to use "books" as reference materials, including those on the endgame - but NOt endgame tables.

THAT is in the TOS.  that is what the rules say- to say you CAN'T use books on the endgame is as ridiculous as saying you can't use the analysis board.

"FAIR PLAY"

What are the rules?

  • No chess programs or engines (e.g. Chessmaster, Fritz, Komodo, Houdini, Stockfish, Chessbase with any active UCI engine, etc.) can be used to analyze positions in ongoing games at any time.
  • In Daily Chess (turn-based games with several days per move), you may consult books or databases (including the Chess.com Explorer) for opening moves. "Tablebases" - which are specialized databases of particular endgame positions - may NOT be used at any time. Further, you may not consult an engine to provide an opinion on your opening database, self-preparation or analysis that would relate to a particular game-in-progress on Chess.com.
  • In Live Chess, no outside assistance OF ANY KIND is permitted.
  • Fixing game results by playing with multiple accounts or losing intentionally is also against the rules.

ok. wait a minute there's a legalese going on here

"you may consult books ... for opening moves".

so this doesn't exactly CONCLUSIVELY answer my claim then.  in USCF, they specifically allow reference moves with the eXCEPTION of endgame tables.

but this is Not quite so specific.

I haven't used any books for my online games.  but it seems to be unclear whether you can or Not (endgame, middlegame).

sorry for the "GREAT PATZER"- I'm sure, when I wasn't. but the above is the rules as given in help and support.

I AM sure that you can't specifically get any advice in the games.

and for the general stuff

"Don't hang Peices!" now if your not allowed any General advice. OMG we are all breaking rules.  all forums members need to immediately quit all their games.Tongue Out

I think it means that you're allowed to consult endgame books for opening moves. Laughing

No Cheating or Computer Help

  • You can NEVER use chess programs (Chessmaster, Fritz, etc) to analyze current ongoing games unless specifically permitted (such as a computer tournament, etc). The only type of computer assistance allowed is games databases for opening lines in Turn-based Chess and Vote Chess. You cannot receive ANY outside assistance on Live Chess games.

But are you allowed to consult the opening moves in end of games opening books or the end of games moves in the opening of games endgames books ?
