Is it cheating to watch other games during a tournament?

There was a tournament where my opponent happened to play the exact same opening as the oponent of a GM playing on the top board (which was broadcast on a video screen outside the tournament hall).  I'd periodically walk over to the screen to see what moves the GM played--- and I was able to copy him around 15 moves, gaining a significant advantage in the process!

What are your thoughts on this? Its not cheating but it seems kind of cheap that I was able to do this.

It probably would be considered aganst the rules and unethical at the least.  Now, if your opponent went up to move 15 without deviation, then you were likely still in theory and once one of you deviated,  you were probably in unfamiliar territory.

Not really an excuse but you should only be relying on your own memory and not someone else in a live game.

I think if I were to find myself your opposing player and learning of this would tend to think it was cheating.  Copying is cheating, no? Unethical for certain. Should be against the rules but they may be included somehow.

Eh.  If he prepared that line, he should really know the theory until move 15.  Still not great ethically though.  Do you have a copy of the game?  Id be curious to see it.

Obviously, but in this particular case the opportunity presented itself. I mean there's no rule against observing others games, so if you catch an idea from one, why can't use you it yourself? There's no  plagarism in chess or awards for orginality. There was a Soviet Olmypiad where 3 games had the exact same position.  Keres waited until Geller made his move, then watched how the game ensued for a while, and upon determining that what Geller played was good, he played the same move.

I don't see an issue with this since there's no practical way to stop it.

Slightly unethical, but such is life.

It's totally legal.

Legal and unethical can still be the same where there are loopholes like this.

Definitely unsporting, but I'll admit it can be hard to resist the temptation.

Look up the curious story of the Gothenburg variation of the Sicilian Najdorf.

The 1955 Interzonal was held in Gothenburg, Sweden. In the 14th round, three Argentine players (Najdorf himself, Panno and Pilnik) all had Black against three Soviet players (Geller, Spassky and Keres). The three Argentines all played the same opening line, a complicated variation that they had cooked up as part of their preparation for the Interzonal. Geller responded with an immediate piece sacrifice... and Spassky and Keres, playing identical positions in the same tournament hall, duplicated Geller's move.

All three Russians won decisively.

It is cheating to Breathe during the games too .

La_Danse_Macabre

If your watching, it's ok. But if your talking, giving away hints, and that kind of stuff, I think it should be considered cheating. However, if you keep it in your mind, it can't be considered cheating.

I don't get that, does that mean we need to bring air tank to every tournament we join
