Is it possible for a human to beat an engine without another engine?

I'm of the opinion that it is possible. There are many positions that computers do not understand. I'm fairly certain that if a human can get one of these, they can get an advantage and win.

No not at all. Assuming we're talking about Stockfish or Houdini...

Huh. I'm in a game with someone on daily chess and I was pretty sure they're using an engine. I played a move that no engine on earth would find and now I'm up a queen. But now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure that's impossible that I could beat an engine without one. I guess they weren't using one after all.

It depends.

There are lots of engines.

Some good, others only low GM or worse level.

HungryHungry, that wasn't because you're smarter than an engine, it's because your opponent f'ed up.  Maybe you could beat an engine if you took smart pills...joketime!

Willie and Otis had been best friends since childhood.  Otis was a hardworking, 2-jobs kinda guy, and Willie never held down a job for more than a week, but he always seemed to have money in his pocket, so, one day when they were shooting pool, Otis asked his friend "How do you do this?  What is your secret?"

Willie said "Smart pills."  Otis replied incredulously, "Smart pills?"  Willie continued

"One a day and I never have to work.  I have a bottle in my glove box right now, I'll let it go to a good guy like you for $20."  Otis forked over a $20 and Willie returned after a minute with a small bottle.  Otis ate one of the pills, looked at his friend and said "These taste like rabbit droppings."

Willie said "See?  You're getting smarter already."

It is possible for a GM (and possibly a strong IM) to win a game or 2 against Komodo, Stockfish, or Houdini (it had been done). Maxim Dlugy had a video on here a while back where he shows how he beat Stockfish 7. The key was to (basically) play like Magnus: avoid sharp tactical lines and slowly improve your position until you finally have an overwhelming advantage (in a closed position). Engines are notoriously poor at evaluating closed positions, but are almost perfect at calculating tactics.

Oh. I didn't do that, I sacrificed the exchange and outplayed the "player" in an open position.

I think a FM defeated Rybka in 2010 with the odds of a knight, pretty sure a GM may beat Komodo 10 at the odds of an exchange.

No I sacrificed the exchange. The "player" was UP the exchange.

Who are you? And did you just admit to using an engines on the forums? I feel kind of bad for your opponent. 14 moves using stockfish would sure net me an opening advantage.

Yes. Make the engine move once every 1 minute. Set the time control to 5 minutes. Do not lose in the first 5 moves.

Yeah my opponent thinks they're winning but I've got a trick up my sleeve (or Stockfish does hehe)

Maxim Dlugy was booted from Titled Tuesday for cheating. The evidence is substantial if you're willing to dig around.

The guy is a fraud. I'd take any of of his claims of beating an engine without assistance with a massive grain of salt.

I mean that's just about knowing theory. I myself can play 5 ply against an engine though, even if it's a strong one. The issue is and has always been playing a 40-50 move game against them. They just make good moves and they never blunder and rarely make inferior ones. Being a GM means you consistently make GM level moves. But however consistent a GM is, a computer is always more so. That's what makes it hard.

What made you think your opponent used an engine?

Lots of people convince themselves they are cheated against all the time.

It's a coping mechanism for sore losers with a superiority complex.

I've been coached by Maxim Dlugy, he's a really, really good player and stand up guy who works hard at chess. You don't need to make up things about Dlugy. I did a quick google search and there's nothing to back up your claim. Also, Dlugy was beating Kasparov long before computers were even a thing. I don't know what world you're living on but it ain't mine.

I've looked at your daily game; Your opponent does play suspiciously like Stockfish 8. He's got forced mate, so I would resign now.
