I remember when I was a child having seeing something beyond the clouds, no wonder, do you know the brain mess up with your remembrances and constantly rewrites your memory to build a consistent history, then there are this collective effect if some place is told to be a UFO scenario, then everybody starts to witness UFOs in that place

Yes, people think their brain and memories are like some sort of video camera. They aren't.

So based on the fact that people might have distorted memories, or be dishonest or duped, you conclude that everyone who believes they've seen a UFO that is or might be extra-terrestrial did not?  Is that the bottom line?  Is there any room in your mind for it still to be a question?

You are a pretty black and white thinker, arent you?

Well, I suppose its rather obvious, given your avatar.

Seriously though, the psychic and prophetic abilities do exist.

But they are not accessible to people who are overly bound the the coarser vibrations perceptions of mundane attachments.  It's like background noise most people don't even notice.  Plus they have weak receivers by not practicing paying attention.  Because they have no perception personally, they assume it exists for no one.

Then there is the question, why doesn't it work on demand 100% of the time?  Well, it is possible that demand and pressure and expectation interferes with the process just like in quantum physics, observing something changes it.

The point is, it's a wash.  Just because you feel psychic phenomena haven't been proven to your satisfaction doesn't mean that it doesn't exist or you have even figured out if it does, or if it is even possible to prove, even if it does exist or is actually common.

I won't even bother asking anything like "And how do you know this?"

Ubik42

What happened to the guy that promised me all the conspiracy memos?

Ubik42

To the guy thats asked how did this thread arise from psychic chess masters, its because they all have the same root: people believing in stuff without any evidence.

Ubik42

Actually I am just trolling you guys. I really believe in ESP and UFO's - and fairies, ghosts, unicorns and water dousing, talking with the dead, rising from the dead, palm reading, lucky 7, phrenology, astral projection, dialectic materialism, Allah, Odin, the tooth fairy, the great pumpkin, astrology, jehovah, heaven's gate, Bigfoot, Nessie, pyramid power, homeapathy, flouridation makes you a commie, genetically modified corn is bad, telekinesis, evil spirits, witches, satan, demons, devils, hollow earth, flat earth, winged horses, and numerology. Oh and Elvis - he is still alive.

Not that they all can be lumped together.

True!

Man, 34 pages in 2 weeks! And what's more amazing is, somehow the admins still allow this thread to stay under "general chess discussion."

That is actually an awesome idea. Seriously.

But I've seen harder core skeptics/atheists/conservative people than you turn into wimpering open-minded beggers of help from a higher deity when they aren't feeling so smug, when the chips are down and they feel espescially weak, vulnerable, alone and helpless.  Then suddenly, not only do they not know it all, or have all the answers and independence, but they know nothing, and are filled only with regret.   Really, all of your confidence and certainly is just an artifice layered over all kinds of flimsy props, heresay, and conditioning.  You aren't as all seeing and objective, independently minded and strong as you think you are. None of us are.

1. You have no idea if they are harder core skeptics than I am, its just something that sounds good to you when you type it.

2. If someone starts believing in astrology or odin when the chips are down, it is still not evidence that astrology or odin exists, is it? All you can really say is that people are trying to grasp onto some hope.

3. I am pre-tested. A few weeks ago I took a week vacation from chess because I thought I was on the verge of dying from a heart attack or stroke. Turns out it was just extremely bad, but not dangerous, heart palpitations (among other, unrelated symptoms as it turns out, like a numb upper lip that I thought was a sign of poor circulation, but instead a result of previously unknown allergies). But on the day of the exam I told my wife "whatever happens, I can't complain because I have a great family and have lived a happy life." I meant that. So I know already how I will respond faced with death...the same as I have responded to life so far. I am happy for the knowldege.

Why did you say all these things? Because of your habit of believing things without evidence. its a bad habit. Here is to hoping you learn to not do that.

[edit: And I noticed the word "conservative" slipped in there. Say what?]

Hitchens was a nasty old drunk.  That which is asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence - it plays out to a draw. No one has the superior position in that case.  Just back to 'inconclusive'

Classic ad-hominem.  Don't attempt to understand what's being said, just malign the speaker in an attempt to discredit the statement.  The quote is actually a very salient point.

Ubik42

Not sure why reflectivist is so anxious to be able to assert without evidence. Oh wait...

Yes, I was echoing the language used in about the Ancient Aliens guy, but crank is a little harsh.  I do think he's careless though

Oh is this thread still active. One of the following things is more ridiculous than the other. Is it A: without advancement of knowledge and instrumentation any reasonable hypothesis is still open. Or is it B: until exactly the moment of conclusive evidence nothing exists.

Maybe a few hundred years.  Depends on the material and how much exposure to the elements.
