I have to tell you the naked truth. You'll never become a GM, because you are simply too old to achieve that goal. Be happy if you become an expert. Regards.

If your an average player now there's no way you're going to be a GM in the future. GM's have a knack for the game that other people don't and it can't be learned. Someone who's a 14 - 1500 is dreaming when they think they'll study and one day be playing Carlsen, because they learned some sneaky moves from a book. What's the big deal about being a GM anyway, when a half-decent program can beat any GM  with ease ?

Yeah, and that Usain Bolt thinks he's so fast. I went faster than he's ever run just this morning, in my car on the way to work.

Given enough time and practice anyone can be a GM. You just got to be hungry for it.

I agree, but that "time" might be well over 100 years for some players. Now anyone reasonably intelligent can become a regular master, and that's already in the very best of the best in the general chess community.

thegreat_patzer

so back to this thread.

didn't we all agree this was a troll thread?

anyways, "can anyone be a GM"?  Boring.

but the urge to be creative.

does anybody have anything fun to add? I like the little violin.  Well done!

better to ask, is it possible to as an aged and addled adult; to play whole tournaments without losing pieces?  no blunders- no easy tactics?

how often are stronger adults giving up pieces?

historically, one of the great chessplayers of the past they say used to play in a budapest coffee house, losing game after game.  they say he skipped a few weeks then game back MUCH stronger and started winning game after game.

does this happen today?

You can't teleport to GM status.  Nothing wrong with having aspirations, but you have to work out how to get there.

Looks like Pfren after a haircut...

I see the resemblance too but I'm sure pfren has a much better life than this guy.

I doubt it's any more likely than becoming a rocket scientist without going to school. There's just no way you could happen upon everything you need to know and somehow just apply it correctly. You'd be practically reinventing the wheel.

One can become a GM without coaching.

Cherub_Enjel

It's certainly possible and plausible. Not for the OP though.

An excellent series of books authored by Yusupov and Dvoretsky could make GIFTED chess players become GM with the help of Stockfish and Chessbase.

This is a 15-min walk away from my house. I see this guy outside the Harvard Square subway station all the time. What are you guys doing in my neighborhood?

Also, in case anyone on this thread is actually looking to study chess seriously and improve their game, I assure you you need a coach. It makes a huge difference, and it makes your own study much more productive as well. I am currently open to new students, virtually through this site, or in person (since apparently at least one of you lives in the Boston area). I'm not just fishing for students (a.k.a. $$$), this is the truth. You can take lessons from someone else - plenty of experienced coaches on here. The point is it's unrealistic to think you can make major jumps in strength on your own, especially if you're below master level.

Best of luck.

Well yeah... he became a GM, not a professor of literature.

Man you can't get your hopes up to become a GM as only 1800 or so try to focus on getting your rating up slowly but surely you might not get GM as quickly as you want but you can get it if you put in a life of dedication oh and get a job your chess career might not go the way you want it to go and u could end up on the streets
