Yes, it is. Practicing it helps you to understand a bit about cooperation between those two particular pieces, but it shouldn't be that helpful to your overall game. At the time I was rated 1500 national elo, I once got a game where my opponent sacrificed a rook for a pawn and hoped I didn't know how to mate, and he was right. Slightly thereafter I learned the thematics by heart, but in roughly 10 years I never got it again in a serious chess match. Once saw a video where a titled female player didn't know how to checkmate either, was for a world match if I remember correctly haha, so you shouldn't be ashamed if you don't know how to

Yes, it's not that hard, but it's sometimes tough to get it in 50 moves if you're rusty on the technique. The main thing is to drive the opponent's King into a corner that's the same color your Bishop travels on and then to use zugzwang to maneuver into one of a couple possible mating positions.
